Your question is a little confusing, it sounds like your friend has a DVD recorder?
You can RECORD movies etc via your TV using DVD Recorder or if you wish to BACK UP DVDs you own, then you will need a Comp along with programs.

Hope this clears it up for you.

I am sorry if as a beginner, I have to ask dumb questions, but have looked at your glossary and it's completely foreign to me...I have downloaded so many programs and have not been able to come out with a dvd yet....I see what you say below...I do not know what "guide" I need...This is what I have...A fairly new computer with XP...1st. I bought a 16X DVD+-R?-RDL (Double Layer) and installed it on my computer thinking it would be just like the music cds...capture them to my computer hard drive and burn them on a dvd blank..., but no, was then told to get DVD Shrink off internet downloaded to descramble...Did that, kept going to different places when all of them told me since Jan they could not give me the tools to do it...Finally bought something that promised to do it 1, 2, 3...I have waited for several hours while something was supposed to be "decoding", then waited for it to burn on to my blank...Still have nothing that will play on computer or reg DVD player....Any help?? Thanking anybody who can....

That sounds so simple, but everyone of them tells me that the software is no longer available or something to buy...I paid $65 for the beginning Drive, downloaded the DVD Shrink, Img burn, and bought for another$40 a program that promised to do it for me....DVDFabdecrypter, and DVD copy....Still can't get the job done...One question...I had a choice in one place to choose instructions for DVD to CD or DVD to DVD...Now I think I want DVD to CD, since I only have one place for DVD or CD, is this right? And how come the instructions go well for a while and then my computer does not do something that's supposed to be the next move? Thanks
Should this program take the movie to my hard disk for me to be able to burn>

I get to on the copy DVD, a choice of AVI format or SVCD format and I think I want the SVCD format and mark it...And now I am going thru this again which tells me it could take hours to get this done, as before it did also...

@jobeth

What software for burning came with your DVD burner. Were you lucky enought to get Nero? If you have DVD Fab decrypter. DVD Decrypter. and shrink, that's really all you need . First you need DVD Fab decrypter to enable you to rip the DVD to you hard drive with DVD Decrypter.And then with shrink you will recode the movie to fit on a 5gb dvd or burn directly with Decrypter to a DL 8GB disc.If you got a full working Nero 6.6 or 7 then all you need is DvD Fab and Nero recode which will rip the movie and burn it to your HDD. Don't put a good DVD movie on a CD R the picture suffers. Blank DVDs have gotten cheap for 5gb. Start by using good DVD Rs by Taiyo Yuden,Verbatims, Sonys made in Japan. After you get the feel for doing the DVD5s then you might want to try the DVD DLs but they are expensive.
Look around for Alcohol's guides here at AD for burning DVDs with all free programs.They are in his signatures I believe. It's really not as hard as you might think once you do it once. For you first tries you can use DVD RWs so you can reuse them instead of getting coasters fron DVD Rs.

@JoBeth

Welcome to the forum. I will take a small stab at helping you if I can. Keep in mind that I am relatively new at this process, but have managed to backup about 125 dvds that I own. I have DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink (both free) and I have the AnyDVD/CloneDVD2 that you have to buy. Both programs have a 21-day free trial, but I bought the programs and it was $$$ sell spent. I use these 2 programs almost exclusively. If you buy both programs, you get a $10 discount for being a member of AD.

When I first started, I used guides made by ScubaPete and bbmayo. I believe these are available here at AD under the "Guides" tab at the top of the page. I know that the ones made by bbmayo are pdf files and they are top notch. I printed them out and put them in a binder to use as a reference. They have step-by-step directions on how to copy movies -- double layer or single layer. I don't have a D/L burner. Take a look at the guides and see if they are what you need. There are some very knowledgeable individuals here and they will help you a lot more than I can. I know because they helped me get to where I am now. Hope some of this helps and Good Luck.
