can you change the aspect of the dvd

I'm using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 to make backups. Is there a way to change the aspect ratio of the dvd to fill the tv screen rather then having it widescreen. If the answers yes but I'll lose a ton of video quality then I wont do it. Thanks for any info on this

I'm fairly certain CloneDVD and AnyDVD can't. If I'm mistaken, someone correct me.
I *think* VOBblanker can do it.
Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

Cigar to you - vobblanker can do it!!
Now the question is the quality. That is one thing I have not played with in vobblanker. I can say the quality converting from PAL to NTSC with this prog is very good.

Give vobblanker a shot - only takes about 10 mins to process so not a big time waster.

You can try TMPGEnc as it will stretch the Pic and then clip it but there is really no way to do it w/o losing video quality
Mr Pink is correct as VobBlanker will do it

this question perplexes me...it would seem to me that this couldn't be done, thats why movies are generally realesed as "wide" or "Full"...i do have some that released with both versions on the same disc...most downloaded (divX or otherwise) seems like you'd be locked into whichever you DL? I'm just not sure about this one. Even if you could transfer a widescreen to fullframe, wouldn't it comprimise the movie since official releases that are full frame are pan and scan?

I haven't tried changed the aspect ratio from wide to full but I have converted PAL to NTSC which has different fps and resolution. Worked fine and looks good!
Vobblanker has options it will change under video attrib - aspect is one and it does list pan scan as an option. You can manipulate the files -the question like you said is how much would the quality be compromised.
I may just have to test sometime soon this and see!

Why would one conver from PAL to NTSC? If the player and tv can support PAL why should one do the conversion. Also which is better for picture quality?

You would convert because the TV or the DVD Player can not play that Type of format. Picture quality is always subjective to the eyes of the beholder

Well I decided to test changing the aspect ratio on a movie. I took a widescreen 16:9 and changed it to 4:3. The results weren't bad while not totally full screen there was much less black space. The picture quality was pretty good too on a 37" TV. Did not look stretched.
But as car.mike said picture quality is in the eye of the beholder!
