Hi,
What is better for copying movies? +R or -R?

How about DL drives - any recommendations on brands and media? Is there a + and - for that as well?

Good Day,

Regarding +R or -R: This is up to you & what your DVD Player will accept. If you want 100% compatibility I would suggest the DVD+R BUT they need to be Booktyped as DVD-ROM & not all DVD Burner offer that option. DVD-R offer a good 97%+ Compatibility & they cannot be Booktyped. Also, DVD-R are a bit less expensive if I'm not mistaken. I would also suggest to stick to a good quality Media like: Taiyo yuden & Verbatim. Yes, they are a bit more expensive but it's all worth it. For the Drives: I use BENQ DW1620 (Booktype option) & Pioneer 110D (Booktype option NOT AVAILABLE). Both are giving me Excellent Results for Movie Backups & Games. I tried the LG Drives But in my opinion they dont last as long as the Pioneer. Hope this Helps.

Booktyping is a way of writing to the disc to trick your standalone DVD player into thinking it is playing a DVD-ROM or store bought movie.

NEC, Plextor, BenQ, Lite-ON, LG, some Sony's and many others are capable of booktyping.

I have never had to do that before, how can I find out if Nero does this by default or where would I check that?

I think -R is more comapatible for the reason of book-typing along with older (as recent as 2yrs for some) stand alone DVD players not being able to read +R format.

If you booktype, the DVD Player, old or not, sees the disc as a DVD-ROM.

@thepunish

Look in my sig at "Why can't I watch my backed up movie in my stand alone DVD player? "

-R's cannot be booktyped to Rom. Only +R is able to.

Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

Here is how to booktype to DVD-ROM with Nero Burning Rom, if your drive supports booktyping:
1.

2.

3.

If you use Nero Recode, after you choose your project( "Main Movie to DVD" or "Entire Movie to DVD"), import the files, select what audio and subtitles you want, click "Next".

On the next page, click "More<<":
