Forgive me if this is a noob kinda question, but I am very new to copying DVD's. I am using DVD Shrink as well as NERO and have been able to succesfully copy several DVD's. I have had some problems with others however, and I am wondering just what it is that I am doing wrong.
DVD Shrink goes through the entire Encoding prodcedure, then prompts me to swap in a blank DVD which I do. It completes the process to about 99% and then the process fails and the disc is ejected.
Oddly, if I choke the DVD size down to around 4,200MB using the Custom setting in DVD Shrink, I can get a successful burn.
I have 1GB of RAM in the computer and burn with a Plextor DVD+/-R/RW burner which I am told is a decent unit.
So, I guess my question is this ... What am I doing wrong such that I cannot seem to get a successful burn all the time when using the standard 4,464MB setting in DVD Shrink?
I posted this in the NERO folder as well as it may be a NERO issue versus a DVD Shrink issue.

Possibly a media issue. What discs are you using? I think my target is set at 4300 or 4360.

Sorry, I guess that would be an important thing to include. :)
It's just a box of TDK DVD-R's that were included with the purchase of the DVD drive.
One thing I did notice -- on some of the discs, there are very thin marks that follow the circumference of the disc for perhaps 3 inches or so. This mark is right at the edge of the disc, no more than maybe 3mm from the outer edge. I guess it could be considered something like a rub mark that follows the edge. It is not a deep scratch or anything, just sort of an imperfection mark along the perimeter for a couple inches. Is that enough to cause the operation to fail?
Next time it fails, I will be sure to capture the dialog and post it here.

Jetdrivr,
Welcome to the forum. I agree w/ neodave as I think it is a blank media question. I also limit the target size in Shrink to 4300 when I use it. You are burning to close to the outer rim as there is no guarantee it will burn exactly to that size as it might be a few MB's off when you use Nero

TDKs are pretty universally disliked. If I were you I'd give Verbatim or Sony a try locally or Taiyo Yudens if online purchases are possible.

Great info. guys. The pack of TDK discs were free with the drive, so I guess you get what you pay for. I will look for some of the brands you suggest when I go buy some more. Is there any particular brand that is the absolute best?
Here's another few questions I have -- with respect to copy protection, are there all sorts of DVD copy protection out there or is there one universal standard? Also, is there any one software solution that can deal with all the copy protection out there?
Presently, I use DVD Shrink and I also have the Nero suite installed that came with the drive I purchased. I understand Nero is pretty good but when I tried to do my first copy, it flashed me a "tsk tsk" message stating that it would not copy a copy protected DVD. That's when I installed DVD Shrink which seems to overlook the copy protection issue. Have I just been lucky or will I ultimately run into DVD's with a little more strict copy protection?
I will probably have a whole bunch more questions as time goes on and I really do appreciate all of your input. I have been lurking on this site for some time now and it really is full of great information.

I'm requesting this thread be closed, as it is a double post. I'm not gonna give any more info seeing as how you already have all you really need.
