Recently I've been having problems with my back-ups freezing. I've backed-up over 600 movies to date and for some reason I'm just now having problems with my new back-ups freezing while watching them. I would say 2 out of every 5 movies I back-up are giving me problems and it is always towards the very end of the movies, the last couple of chapters or so. I always try and search for others having the same problems and get all my questions answered, for that I want to thank everyone. But for some reason I can't seem to fix the freezing problem. I use SHRINK, AnyDVD and Nero.

I'll try to answer most of the questions that someone might ask me in order to speed up the process. I use a Compaq DVD-ROM DVD-115 player to play the movie and have resently purchased a SONY DVD RW DRU-810A burner. I started having problems a month or so ago and thought that it was my Memorex burner because it started making clicking noises while in the burning process. I've also taken advice from others and now use the re-author feature as well.

Like I said earlier I've backed up over 600 movies with all types of media, usually the cheapest I could find and NEVER came across any problems. Once I started having these problems I took the advice of other messeges and stopped using TDK and Memorex. Maybe I was just lucky with all the other back-ups until now, I don't know. So now I use SONY media in my SONY burner. For awhile the first couple of movies were okay but now I'm having the same problem. If anyone can help me I really would appriciate it. I want to appoligize ahead of time because I'm sure this type of question has been posted elsewhere but I just can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for.

Thanks again,

In my opinion it's the SONY Media, I recently ran into the same problem using SONY DVD+R AccuCORE Ver 1.2/1x-8x I could take the freezing copy and back IT up to a different DVD media (usually RiData) and it would eliminate the problem.

A friend of mine also said he was having trouble, I asked him what brand he was using and it was the same SONY media. Once I stopped using SONY I stopped having a problem.

How are you viewing those backups when the freezing issues occur?

Is it the compaq dvd-rom/a stand alone player/or the sony dru-810A burner?

The answer to this will help narrow down the problem.

Usually stand alone players show these issues. If so,try viewing one of those backups with issues and see how your sony burner plays them on your pc. Just view the areas that those issues show up,like the end of your backup. That sony DRU-810A should play its own backups and look near original in quality. Make sure that burner plays them ok.

Another possibility is your backup target size. Maybe you've gotten a hold of some uneven dye on your media. These will show those issues on the end of your backups. Try reducing your backup target using dvd shrink:

Open up dvd shrink
Edit
Preferences
Click on dvd-5/scroll till custom
Enter 4360
OK

Memosux and TDK cmags may have to have an even further reduced backup target of around 4300 mbs. This keeps the outer edge of your backups from being burned. A slight more compression, but since you are doing main movie only-it shouldn't hurt none.

agent0008- thank you I'll try different media.

saugmon- The stand alone player that I watch my movies on is a TOSHIBA SD-2900. I've had it for several years. The COMPAQ DVD Player is my "D: drive" and the SONY burner is my "E: drive".

I did play the movie that was freezing on the SONY burner as you requested (e: drive) and it played perfectly. I also tried to play it on the DVD player on my computer (d: drive) and it froze.

Also I had read a thread from another a few days ago and had already chaged my target size to 4300 on Shrink. Do you want me to change it to the 4360 as you had stated? Thanks for your reply!

I keep my backup target at 4360 mbs on my quality verbatim/ritek/and sony yuden000-T02.

Don't knock sony unless you are using the older 1x-4x or 4x speed. The older speed of sony just don't even compare to the 1x-8x speed.

Sony dash 1x-8x: Sony08D1/ Ty-g02
Sony Plus 1x-8x: SonyD11/Yuden000-T02

Taiwan and japan makes most of sony media and the quality can vary between the tys and the sony made discs.Look on the outer labe of spindle to find country of origin.I only buy the japanese spindles.

I do majority of my backups for main movie only. Lots of times,I'll be well below the 4300 target. You'd be surprised out how some of those main movie only backups have over a quarter of a inch of unburned dye!

Just look at the dye side of your backups.
4360 mbs will burn all but the last millimeter of the outer edge of disc.

The sony burner should be a quality drive. It may even be a re-badged benq 1640?

You verified those backups on the sony and they looked good. After that, comes all the other drives that you play those backups on.

I'd bet it's the other drives faults to those playback issues. You've used different media and sounds like you used 2 different burners.

I've found that stand alone players show those freezing issues as they slowly wear down. Same goes for dvd-rom drives in pcs. One last resort option may be a lens cleaning disc.Their reading ability drops. It may help/may do nothing/or can even ruin a drive. It's a last resort, before drive replacement. You can get a $20-$30 standalone player that has a 99% chance of playing your backups. You can get a dvd-rom drive for around $20
Just something to take note of if the reduced backup target doesn't help.

Another thing you want to check, try running an error scanning program like dvdinfopro or Nero speedtest. See how errors show up on those backups that have the freezing issues.Use the sony drive to scan them. You can get dvdinfopro here:

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

Look for the free version with adverts. Try the PI/PO test.

I use to have the same standalone player and was having the same problem when using dvd+r media , book-type to dvd-rom if + dvd media , your sony dru-810a should be able to do this . This should take care of your concern

Try scanning them with dvdinfopro and see how many errors are on them.

Ok, it took me awhile to figure out how to use dvdinfo pro and it showed that I had 12 errors. What does that mean besides I got a jacked up back up?

Ok maybe I don't know what I'm doing after all. I just did another speed test on a movie in which I had no problems with and it showed that I had 4 errors. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing here. I've looked for guides for DVDinfo pro and can't find anything. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. I'm lost. Any suggestions besides QUIT? :) Thanks for your help.

Freezing, stuttering, skipping, pixelating, etc. is caused by cheap media that has cheap dye and or burning too fast. However, "chapters jumping or black screens at certain scenes" is/are caused by some encrypted structure/sectors that has not completely wipe out yet.

Honestly, I only used genuine YUDEN, Verbatim "advanced azo or datalife plus" and Hitachi's Maxell (made in japan) and I've never seen/experienced any playback issues whatsoever. In addition, I've always customized all of my backups to 4400MB - 4460MB and my backups has worked flawlessly.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Ive seen freezing pixillation on a copy of a movie i did on a cyberhome dvd player. It was the player in this case as the offending movie plays well in a portable dvd i have, along with every other dvd player i can find in the house. The cyberhome was not mine, but i think it is cheap and probably having problems. Scans of disc showed no major problems and a quality score of 95 on a sony Ty disc. Ive used Sony D-21 media and it is ok, but not as good at the Ty media for whatever reason. You may have also changed your burn speed recently. I went from 4 to 8x but am messing with 6x burns right now. If your going much faster than 4x -8x that could cause problems also. More errors are induced to the copy on faster burns in many cases, but in the 4-8x range you can sometimes get better burns with 8x than 4x. Testing with nero, info pro, kprope2, etc will show how many errors the copy got. The less PIFs you get, the better the quality score is in Nero drivespeed.

I set most of my target sizes to 4400 but suggest 4300 to the average person as that will prevent edge burning on cheap media as saugmon said.
That scan was from this thread:

I side with "alkohol" on his opinion of bad or cheap media being the culprit along with using the option to burn on a fly. I burn at 8x when burning from the original or a back up disc to a -R 8x Verbatim or SONY disc. Now if I'm backing-up a movie from file I may slow my burn speed to 4x due to the rapid encoding or compression that takes place when burning from a file even though I always use the Recode2 High Quality "Slow Burn" option.

Thank you so much for all the good advice from everyone. I will definatly upgrade my media to those that were mentioned. I appriciate all the time and direction that was given to my situation. You have answered all me questions and those of other members as well I'm sure. I lowered my burn speed to 2X instead of the max I've always used, it took much longer, but the quality was much better. Thanks again to all.

hi. I been burning dvds for a while w/o any problems. Lately, with the new movies, everytime i burn a dvd movie and watch it on my dvd player, it freezes around an hr after the movie started. I use DVD Shrink and Nero to burn it. Sometimes i use AnyDVD for those hard to burn dvds. my dvd player is a Phillip DVP 642 and my burner is a Sony DRU 530A. I use TDK dvds to burn the movies. appreciate the help.

@ssjstewie
It might be the media. You can also check to make sure your firmware is up to date. Defragment your hard drive often. TDK media gives many ppl problems. Try switching to something like Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden discs found in Sony, Maxell, Fuji if MIJ is on the label. Ritek media is also good, but i dont suggest it in this case, as this is just a media switch test, and ive seen recent problems with ritek in some media codes.
It could be the player, if that is the only system you notice it on. Try watching the same movie on your PC, or another standalone and see if it freezes at the same point. If so, its probably the copy and not the player. If its the copy that is bad, then you have something wrong going on in the copy process. If you go to the Nero forum and post a burn log, we can look at your setup and see if anything is wrong. Just start a thread, and someone will show you how to post a log. You will get plenty of suggestions, and Nero logs are pretty good at pointing out conflicts and needs for upgrades/changes.

I tested the dvds on both my laptop and the pc and they both work fine. Could it be that the lens in my dvd player is dirty or is about to break down? i had the player for about 2 yrs now,

Also, do u think its a good idea to update my Nero software? im using 6.6.0.13, but i heard that updating it may cause problems with burning the new dvds that has complicated copyright protection on it.

That 2 yr old stand alone player may need a lens cleaning. That's a last resort though. Worst comes to worst, you may have to pick up another $25-$35 player. Those el cheapos usually play everything you slap in them.

Updating Nero?

The only problems with Nero that I had was when I updated it. I lost my ability ot erase my rw media. I then uninstalled that newest update/ran Nero cleantool6 to completely remove all remnants of Nero off my pc/and downloaded my Nero 6.0.0.21b oem.

If you go that route, make sure you leave out the INCD packet.
