OKAY I have tried DVX and other programs and can get the movies to under 1gb.. I do not care about the menus and extras and I am just compressing the main movie.. I have a few movies I obtained from a friend they are the full movie and no extras the file size is 280mb on one and 480mb on the other with no loss of quality.. they are in rmvb format. how did he get them that small and not lose quality???

Unless you can compare the original movie to the movie you got, the eye can play tricks on the "quality" of the movie. If you are able to step frame by frame (for each movie) - side by side, my guess is that you will see some frames missing. You can loose a certain percentage of the content, and your eye will fool you into thinking that you are seeing the whole picture... when in reality you have just missed one-third of the movie! This trick is done for movies that have a lot of CG's (Computer Graphics) in them. Some of these movies, you can go frame by frame and see that the images "jump" -mostly do to some frames that were removed (for what ever reason).
-Hope this helps...Cheers.

Thank you for the input. I understand that if you go under 700mb you will lose surround sound usualy.. the movies I have are good enough quality for me I watch most of them on my computer anyways and have so many dvds that I want to put them on a my external hard drive. I am very happy with the quality of those movies I mentioned earlier.. my ? is how was it done or how can I compress movies to under 500mb and still have good quality I never watch a movie frame by frame so I am happy as long as its a good enough quality to watch. If I lose surrond sound its okay too I usualy use my headphones anyways... so how can it be done.. do I need to use rmvb format or another???/

I hope this helps...I had a friend give me a movie on 2 CD's (not DVD's), and the quality was very good. It seemed to be in a "SVCD" format, which my friend said that he considered to be a "better" quality than the "VOB" format that DVD's come in. I would have to agree. The compression/quality seems to be the best that I have seen. But, I did not have the "original" to compare it to. I came across a program that might do what you are looking for. It is called "Super DVD Ripper" - http://www.dvdtodivx.net/ - With this program you can rip a DVD and convert it into SVCD, VCD or AVI. You can also convert "VOB" into SVCD, VCD or AVI. It doesn't seem to convert the "standard DVD" to the "VOB" format, which most people seem to want to do. I have not had a chance to try out the program, so I don't know what the compression would be after doing the conversion - or what the quality would be. You can download a trial version, try it and see if it does what you are looking for. I would be intrested to see if this helps and does what you are looking for it to do.
