Data to DVD problem

I cannot burn Data to my DVD burner. I have used several programs including Nero 6.3 and always the same result. When I press "Burn" the computer locks up and has to be rebooted. I have the latest firmware and the drive burns movies just fine with DVDClone2. I can burn all the data I want to CD but not DVD. I want to back up my files on the PC but still am not able. Please help. Intel P3 700 running Windows XP SP2 and 512 ram with the latest LG firmware installed.. Thank you in advance.

Thanks but that's what I thought also and downloaded the lastest version but still the same thing. Could it have anything to do with the drive being a slave to another CD burner?

Here is all i could find at nero about that:

also if you put up a nero burn log, we can look thru that and see if you have any other problems going on. Dont worry about this being in the wrong forum, I will get a mod to move this once you put up a log. You should have one there, even if you didn't make it to the burn process. It sounds like you have some kind of system conflict going on and the log may show it.
Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
These things record all burns, and we only need the last one. The burns are seperated by something like this

that was from a Nero 6 log, but 7 looks much like that. Underneath the divider is the operating system, and right below that is the begining of the serial number. When posting a log, just include the last burn log, and edit out your serial numbers by typing xxxx over them.

There is no log available in my Nero. I searched the entire computer and came up with nothing. Is there anything else I could send you? Thanks again for your help.

Strange about no log, i guess you looked where i showed where they normally hide.
You could run Nero infotools. It produces a log when it starts up, and to save it just click on the floppy disc symbol and make sure all the options are checked off on the bottom part.
I dont think there is a serial number in that log, but check it before posting. That will give us some more information to work with. The Nero history file should be in the directory where you have Nero and it is a .txt file. But we can use the info in the Info tool log if you cant find the normal history files. The history file includes things like memory useage during burn, media used, much more information about what was going on in the burn process than an info tool log can tell us.

UPDATE!!!! Just on a whim I booted the PC in safe mode and guess what? It burned data to DVD. In fact we are watching the pictures of our kids on the TV right now that we took with the digital camera. The back ground music is Digital Hip Hop provided from our cable company. Now the million dollar question is.....Whats causing the conflict. Any DVD? Clone DVD2? Avast? The list goes on and on. Fact is I think I load too much junk on the drive and bog down the old 700.

When you boot in safe mode, you are not loading a lot of programs and drivers. You also have more free memory for ripping that way.
Im looking thru the log, and i see something right away:

its up to A209, and you might have problems upating directly to 209 as yours is so far behind. If you cant go directly to A209, start with the oldest one listed, and get it to take, then move up to the latest, if it will take then. I had to do it that way for one of my drives.
Updated firmware is important for burning.
The other drive has out of date firmware also.

It didnt say what type of media you use, but Verbatims and Taiyo Yudens found in Sony, Maxell, Fuji if made in Japan is on label are the only ones i suggest using.
Update the firmware and when you get a chance you could get some more memory for the system, but you can probably get by with 512 if you manage the memory well.

You guys without a doubt ROCK. Thanks for all the help you gave me. I just wish you lived next door and was able to come over and hands on update my PC so it ran to it's full potential.
Well I tries to update the firmware for the drive but when I did, guess what?????? The same thing happened. The computer froze and had to be rebooted. I tried the Nvidia thing but couldn't figure it out. Maybe I'll just through the piece of junk out the window and start from scratch.
P.S. I love your Cat. Could you send it down here and let it loose in my neighbors back yard to take care of her stupid dogs!!!!!

I think from what i read on the NVIDA fix, you uninstall it thru control panel>system>hardware tab>device manager and look for the NVDIA driver in there somewhere. Expand (click on the + sign) IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on it and do un-install. Reboot machine and windows should load its own drivers in place of the NVIDA ones

Try looking for your nero history this way. On windows start button click on Search button Click on Documents, and put in nerohistory.txt . It will search your computer for the nerohistory file and show you where it is. If you can find it, paste it and we might be able to tweak some more stuff for you.

LOL, I hear you. Ive felt that way many times on some computer problems. Save that option as the last resort. It really sounds like you have a major conflict maybe an irq conflict going on. One or more devices are probably trying to use the same IRQ to send commands and the system freaks out by going in to a reboot. (thats just a guess on my part) Check everything in the control panel device mananger and check properties mainly on the IDE channels and display adapters, but expand everything and do a Properties check. If you have a conflict windows will show a yellow triange with an ! in the middle.
and here is what it shows in the device manager
Click on the properties and it pulls up another window.
theres the visual way to do it. :) Yours should show NVIDA drivers and un-install them with that uninstall tab, then reboot, and windows should load its own during boot up.
