Nero 7 says burn successful but DVD won't play.

I am having a different sort of problem with Nero 7 than what I have read on the forum. For about 60% of my burns of DVD file structures off my hard drive, Nero is telling me that the burn has completed successfully, but the DVD will not play either on my computer or my DVD player. I can't even view the contents using Windows Explorer. I have no problem playing the DVD files directly from the hard drive, whether in Nero Player or Windows Media Player.

The problem usually occurs if I do ANYTHING else on my machine before the burn. If I re-boot before the burn, it often will work. It happens even if I drop the burn speed down to 6x or 4x.

My DVD burner is a Lite-On 16X SOHW 1693S IDE configured as master on the same channel as a SONY CD-RW. I am using TDK PrintOn 8x DVD-R media. I am running WINXP Pro SP2 on a Pentium IV 3.0 GHz machine with 1 GB RAM.

I downloaded the latest Nero Ultra 7 update, and got 2 successful image burns before the same thing started happening again. I checked my ASPI layers using InfoTool and they are working properly.

Nero Tech support has not been very informative. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

we have the same burners. i was having big trouble with -r media using the official firmware. i found a patched firmware from the codeguys called kc4b and have been loving it. burns both -r and +r great. if you want to give it a try its here http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-1693S . worked for me.

Update the firmware to KSOB then I would switch to better media. TDK is not one of the better ones. This can be another reason for the playback issues on your player. Players can be picky w/ media.
Ones to use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Instore look for Verbatim or made in japan Sony or Fuji - these will usually id as Taiyo Yuden.

Id also uncheck that data verification as after all, this is a DVD-R disc and playing a movie back or scaning it with Nero cd/dvd drive speed is a better check. It also looks like the errors were at the end of the disc

New LITE-On firmware, older Nero version, and backing off size of burn did not do the trick. I finally installed rcgamer's suggested patched firmware and haven't made a single coaster since! Thanks, rc, and also thanks again to all of you who suggested fixes.

The problems with 7.0.5.4 do not seem to affect all systems. I actually had some issues with 7014b. I followed the recommended procedure and uninstalled 7014b, ran the 2 clean tools, uninstalled the ASPI layer (NOT needed for nero) and did a clean install of 7054. I have had no ptoblems at all.
BTW my main use for NVE is to produce slideshows from scans of negatives that I took pre-digital and 8MP images derived from highbit RAW images (about 5MB each). I have sucessfully put about 800 images in a slideshow, 8 shows of about 9 minutes (standard quality) and slightly smaller programs in High quality.- PAL Australia.
Athlon Barton CPU, 1 GB generic RAM, Gigabyte nForce3 Ultra m/b,2 sata2 WD KS 250 BG HDD +Pioneer A08 DVD burner (not oem)
I use Ritek 8x DVD-R disks. Can't remember the last coaster
I always burn to image recorder first and then use NeroBurningRom to burn to disk. Very straight forward.

Since you folks have alwyas helped me ... here is my 2 cents for

Griffin ... "Cookie Cutter Method"
1. Use "ImgBurn" free software to do all of your burning Forget NREO!
2. Use only Taiyo Yuden Media. If you prefer DVD+R, you can even Booktype these to DVD-ROM and it will playback in any and all stand-alone players.
3. Burn at speed 4X.
4. Use a Good DVD Burner: BenQ, NEC, Lite-on ... I have personal expeience with DW-1640 (Firmware BSOB) and NEC 3540A (latest firmware) ... both top notch burners and readers.
5. If you must run a check on your burned DVD then use "NERO CD-DVD Speed" program check ... but, you don't even need to do this step if you stick with Steps 1 thru 4.
