I've seen a few people have probs with Matshita drives, power calibration error could be laser probs, so it could also be your drive, as well as media problems!

It never rains but pours!

@beauseph
The error you received can mean that the firmware doesn't match the drive.
Try this one:
http://121ware.com/support/download/003/811bh102.exe

Power calibration errors are usually caused by media that a firmware update may help.
Make sure you are using quality stuff like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
Which branch are your using?

Here's 2 more things to try - straight from Nero's website on power calibration.
Quote:
# Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
# Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Verbatim is good media - but check your connections and config.

You may then need to take it in for service - Little harder on a lappy than a tower.
I have a matshita (different model) in my laptop and no problems w/ Taiyo Yuden but haven't used verbatim on it.
You can try different media like made in japan sony or fuji and see if that helps. Or another burning program.
If not may be time for a service call.

This may work, a fix for Nero that sometimes works;

1 on desktop click start
2 select control panel
3 click on administrative tools
4 click on services
5 browse your way down to IMAPI CD BURNING COM SERVICE
6 right click (on IMAPI) then select properties
7 in the middle of the window it will say start up type.click on the arrow to the right and select disabled.
8 make sure you click APPLY

@pulsar
Well may not suck that bad - I hope. Try pulsar's fix.
The firmware found for your drive may not be the right ones - this is one reason why you receive 'supported drive not connected'. Generic way of saying a. either the firmware is incorrect (nice little fail safe) or it can't see the drive if the correct one.
My experience w/ Matshita has been mission impossible on finding info on my model. Since I haven't had any problems I just stopped looking - but I don't burn alot on my laptop.
It could just be a simple call to the maker of your laptop to find the solution or firmware.
Let us know what happens!
Good Luck!

Just my 2 cents worth.....

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD. During the write process, it continues to do this test to get the best write/burn throughout the whole CD (called Running Optimum Power Calibration).This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" the cause will be either poor media, poor power, firmware out of date, or a defective recorder.

Try:
This error can be caused in conjunction with some (cheap) medias, try to burn at a lower speed or switch to another brand of discs.
The media your using isn't liked as suggested here by the log:
"Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)"

Update the firmware of your recorder as suggested.

Make sure your burner is connected to the secondary IDE port/channel as master and set to deliver UDMA-2, keep it on a ATA 100 bus 40 pin cable avoiding fast ATA 133/166/233 and 266.

Try different configurations, such as connecting your CD-ROM drive to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

Uninstall nero from your sytem using the general cleantool, then reinstall version 7.0.1.4b (with out nero's INCD).

Make sure your mother boards chipst drivers are upto date, also make sure you're using Microsoft's standard IDE drivers as I believe they do the best job.

Make sure you don't have more than one installed burning application, this can sometimes cause problems (some software apps replace ASPI driver by their own) so install only one, if using nero then the one that comes with it is sufficient.

As also suggested, you can deactivate for test (only with Windows XP) "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", go to menu "start" > "settings" > "administration" > "services", search "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", rightclick and deactivate "starttyp".

If all fails, get a new burner.
