Hello: I have benn told that "Dvd Shrink" caused the following happening? I recently purchased another Dvd Burner capable of burning at 16X speed. It is a Hpdvd 740 model. I also have a burner that burns at 8X speed. After the 16X speed burner was installed I burned a movie at 16X speed on the newly acquired burner. The copy to disc was rated at 16X and was a Sony. When I tried to burn the movie, I received a message stating that the burner could only burn at 4X speed and 16X wasn't available... I then tried to burn the movie on the 8X burner and I was allowed to burn at 16X speed - on an 8X capacity burner - and it worked??? Yes they are correctly internally hooked up and on "My Computer" they both are correctly identified, ie if the 16X speed burner is selected, that burner drawer opens. The cpmputer guru at "Best Buy" claims that "DVD Shrink" is manipulating this crossover? Any suggestions? Ronnies

What is the firmware for the new burner? Although it is new and you would think it should have the latest firmware, maybe it doesn't. You could give it a try. What program do you use to burn from Shrink? Nero or DVD Decrypter?

hello cyprusrom: I use only "Dvd Shrink" there is no other "burn" program involved. I would think that "Nero" is the burning program since I have that on my computer. What do you mean by "Firmware"?
Thanks for your kind reply. ronnies

Firmware is the program that your burners and other hardware run from.

No way Shrink caused this to happen. Shrink has nothing to do with your burning process, it only compresses the DVD files and writes them on your harddrive.

It seems that your burners aren't seeing the DVD media you are using for what it is. The fact that 2 different burners are reading different write speeds on the same media is a hint that firmware isn't quite up to snuff.

What media are you using?

Are the burners set up one as master and one as slave? Make sure that the new drive is set up the same as the one you replaced.

The "Media" that I am using, I presume you mean the Disc manufadturer - is "Dynex" 16X 120 min DVD+R, "fuji" 16X 120 min DVD+R and "Maxell" 8X 120 min DVD+R. Yes the Burners are set up as one Master and one slave. I am not positive that the "New" drive, the 16X Drive, is positioned in the same way as it was prior. I had a "Computer Technician" do the changeover so I am not sure as how the "Master" and "Slave" arrangements were. It seems as though the 16X "called for" is being accepted by the 8X burner and The 8X is going to the 16X burner... I didn't think that an 8X burner could run at a 16X speed BUT it is???? This is really confusing. Thanks for your efforts, any other suggestions are appreciated. ronnies

Still having problems with the two burners - burning at their respective WRONG speeds? Checked hookup internally and all appears OK. Don't understand how an 8X burner can burn at 16X speed? It's still burning at that speed, am I going to harm this 8X burner doing this? ronnies

Can you post a Nero log for both burners? This will tell us how they are set up and the firmware.

By the way, the media you are using is not the best. If your burning backups of movies, your burning WAY to fast.

When you have more than 1 burner in your system, your OEM version of Nero will only work fot the 1st burner. In order for both burners to work properly, you must have the full version of Nero.
I have 5 DVDRW burners on the same system & I am using DVD Shrink too but I don't faced any burning problems like yours.

Thanks for all of the important information. I wasn't aware of the speed restriction on burning movies? I thought if they made 16X speeds and burners that can utilize them, they must be OK for burning movies... I will burn all movies at 8X from here on out - thanks again. ronnies

You should consider using Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell, Sony, media types. You can get an evaluation of them at the Media site at this forum. Great information about how each type of media stacks up against each other.

Hello "Semid13" Sorry that I'm remiss in responding to you but you mentioned that my OEM version of "Nero" will only work for the first burner? You said that I must have the full version of "Nero" for more than one burner to function properly.
What is an "OEM" version of "Nero"? How would I know if I had the full version or not? I didn't load "Nero" on my computer so - I don't know what I have except as stated in prior messages "Something is not right". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

An OEM version typically comes with hardware and is not a full version, furthermore, the OEM version is locked to the specific device that it came with and connot be used with another drive. The long and short: it is drive specific and not fully functional.

You must have an unrestricted full OEM version, there are different version of available.
Quote:
OEM, when used to describe software, is used to differentiate that version of the software which is bundled with other hardware or software from that same software package sold on its own as a retail package. The packaging and legal rights that come with the OEM versions of a software package generally differ from what is provided with the retail versions, though the functionality of the software tends to be the same.

OEM software may be licensed under conditions requiring that it be sold with computer hardware. To avoid contravening the conditions while passing OEM software savings on to end users, some retailers will sell OEM software with a "token" hardware device of small cost, such as a tiny SIMM or a cable splitter.

ronnies ,
I had to read all of the answers to your problem and the help given.
1. BestBuy Guru's if they are any good would be working for a Tech Company instead of for BestBuy. They usually are not the smartest people there. Shrink is not manipulating the crossover as the program can not do that.

2. Up date the firmware for the new burner so it will recog that blank media properly

3.Can you post the Brand and model number of both burners.

4.Unless you have hacked the 8X burner there is no way it will burn at 16X. What I think happened is "The Guru" has changed the setting in the OS ( making H drive now the G drive and vice a versa) and when you tell it to burn using that drive you are really using the 16X drive when you think you are using the 8X. He also could have crossed the cables

Hello Car.mike, we have communicated before. The 16X brand is "Hewlett Packard" and is model "Hpdvd740". The 8X Burner is "Benq DVD DD DW 1620". Car.Mike, How do I update the firmware for the 16X (the new Burner)Burner? I am not very good at this, just good enough to get myself into loads of trouble. I discovered that I have two (2) "Nero" cd discs, one for the 8X and one for the16X. I believe the 16X is the one in the computer at present. AND written on the 8X disc is a blurb that " the software will only work with the cd recorder that it is bundled with? The one (I believe) installed now is the "Nero Express6" and has a "OEM Suite" with 5 icons on the disc. I think I can print right on this blank discs with this - I don't even know if it was installed in it's entirity?
Man, what a mess... Definitely need help.. ronnies

ronnies,
I tried to find the firmware for that burner but the Firmware Page does not have that burner listed so it must be really new.Maybe one of the other members here can get that firmware for you if it is available.
You have 2 copies of Nero. If you totally uninstall Nero from the computer and then use Nero CleanTools to clean anything else off the computer that Nero leaves on and then I would re-boot and then install the Nero version that does not say it works only on that burner. You might want to see if it will recog. the other burner. Using 2 Nero's is totally screwy as you would have to switch back and forth and even I would get confused.

Thanks Car.Mike: Perhaps I didn't communicate clearly. I currently have only one (1) "Nero" program loaded on my computer. I went into "control panel" and it lists "Nero Suite", which is the one with the five icons on it. I presume that this is compatible with both of the burners that I have loaded on my computer.
How can I determine that a "Nero" program recognizes a specific burner? Car.Mike, thanks for your indulgence into my problems. I truly am thankful for your help... ronnies

Open Nero Start Smart and use Nero System Tool. I am not sure if it "Recognizes" it, will mean that will actully burn with it. Or you can open any burning project you want, for example Nero Burning Rom, and see if you can select either burner as destination target.
