I?ve encountered a problem using Verb 16X and not sure how to resolve. I have a Sony 800A DL burner that is rated for up to 16X. I use Nero 6 burning rom as my program of choice for burning. I recently bought a 100 pack of Verb 16X from Best Buy. Every movie I burn on these disks cannot be played on any of my 3 DVD players. It seems as if none of the players can recognize the disk.

I?m burning at 6X, the slowest speed available via Nero on this drive, booktyped as DVD Rom and nothing seems to work. Have burned numerous Verb 8X?s with no problems in the past.

Can the problem be related to the DVD players and why? Any suggestions on how to eliminate all of the recent coasters would be appreciated.

I can see 1 of those players having trouble with them, but all 3?

Are they actually burned? Look at the bottom/dye side for the discoloration of the burn.

Throw one of those socalled coasters into your sony dru 800A and play it on your pc. See how it reacts to them.

If that sony burner recognizes those verbatim +16x backups:

Download this free program called dvdidentifier:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...

Insert backup into the sony drive/open up dvdidentifier/select sony dru800A as the drive/click identify/click log.

Then paste that log into your next post. I want to make sure those backups are actually booktyped. Maybe your setting got swiched.

It'll look just like this, and these are actually booktyped wher it says: Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [YUDEN000]
Media Type ID : [T02]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take note of what the current firmware version is on your sony burner. Dvdidentifier will tell you that also.

What program are you using to booktype?

If that sony don't recognize those backups, something else is wrong. Also paste in a Nero burn log if you can.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll report back in the morning. I'm almost positive they are burned because I tried to test the differences in the quality of the burns at the various burn speeds using the Nero test (can't remember the name of the app and am not at home on my machine). At least several of the discs were run thru and I was able to get appropriate quality results varying from 84% to 95%. (I'm sticking with either 6x or 8x max for any burns).

As for the players - 1 is an older moder JVC, another is a Toshiba dual VHS/DVD deck that is less than a year old (not sure of the modle #). The 3rd maching is at my in-laws and I don't know that brand. I agree that I might have expected problems on the older JVC but didn't think the Toshiba would have a problem, especially if set as DVD-Rom.

The one thing I didn't check (and the most obvious cause it just hit me in the face) was to see if the 800A or my older NEC burner could play it.

Did more checking last nite. Looks like I had a combination of problems. I believe I had a bad burn on 1 of the disks and also have a player that has problems reading the 16x media. One of the disks was read perfectly on the Sony DRU 800a. I was also able to get it to read fine on my Toshiba player. However, the older JVC player wouldn?t ever recognize it. I reburnt it on both 16x and 8x media (logs for both burns shown below). The 8x read fine on both players however, the 16 x only worked sporadically on the JVC. Sometimes it would start playing and then get very pixilated and stop reading. On the Toshiba, there were no problems reading the 16x at all.

Is this common? Will I need to replace the JVC player or is it simply a result of a marginal quality burn?

Here?s the info from DVD Identifier for the Verb 8x media

Looks like Nero is reporting your DMA set to off on both drives.

You can enable this in device manager by uninstalling the drivers (primary IDE).

Update to Nero latest version 6.6.1.4

check this guide by Alkohol (member @ afterdawn) for DMA

Have a Read at this for general Nero compliance;

Guys - I appreciate the help and willingness to look over my problems. It's usually the obvious things that we all tend to overlook. I stared and stared at the logs several times and never noticed that the DMA was off.

Sometimes it just takes another pair of eyes.

I'll update the firmware for both drives and reset the DMA and see if that fixes my problem

Thanks again.

I can't believe you burned those backups in around 10 minutes with your dma's off. It usually takes forever, and errors out.

When it comes to playing backups, some of those stand alones can be very tricky. I've encountered a player that would play Verbatim +4x-MCC-002,but wouldn't even recognize a Verbatim +4x=Ricohjpn.

I've also witnessed a few players that would play my Nero backups, but poor playback issues with dvd decryer's burn engine on their ISO read and write backups.

OK here-the latest - I flashed both of my drives with the newest firmware and then attempted to reset the controller to allow DMA.

The IDE controller in my system is an NVidia card. When I look at the transfer mode for both Primary and Secondary channels, it indicates that it is set to DMA 5 Ultra 100 for the primary and DMA 5 Ultra 32 for the secondary as the default. Even so I deleted the drivers and let windows reinstall. Both came back with the same. Then went into Nero Info and found that it indicates both drive as Autorun but no indication of DMA being on or off. Didn't burn a disk to look at the log to see if Nero still shows DMA as being off.

Could the DMA really be on but Nero simply doesn't recognize it as on? The burn times reflected in the log are pretty consistent with what I've been experiencings. About 10+ min for a burn at 6x and about 8 min for a burn at 8x.

Also didn't update to the newest verrsion of Nero yet. I've got version 7 ready to install but have been waiting for additional updates to clear all of the typicall new version bugs.

If you have Nvidia Ide drivers installed the yes,

It was quite well documented on various internet sites, when i built my PC. I used microsofts Ide drivers because of the problems at that time.

Your DMA will almost certainly be on, but not getting reported accurately to Nero.

I'd update Nero version, seeing you've already flashed your drives and try the burn on those verbs again.

If you've been burning with no issues previously then, as i mentioned, your DMA is probably getting miss-reported to Nero.
