i went out and got some verbatim +r 16x yesterday and ive been burning them at 8x. my question is, is there really a problem raising the speed to 16x (note: the only thing im using these for are datas, no movies are being burned here) or should i just keep it at 8x. i dont want to risk any disc errors or anything so its not a huge deal going slower, but if i can save a couple minutes each disc, that would make this process a lot shorter..thanks
Burning half the rated speed of the disc is about par. I tend to go with burner quality. Some of the quality 16x drives actually perform better at the faster speed,when using quality media like those verbatim 16x. I noticed this on my benq 1640 when I started getting crc errors on some of those backups that were burned at 2.4x and 4x when I went to re-rip them later. I ran some scans on them using dvdinfopro and the 8x backups showed the fewest errors. The 12x backups were just a hair worse and the 4x backups had the most errors. So I burn at 8x on those quality verbatim and sony yudenooo-T02 media.
Now data is less torture on media.Backing up movies,I may squeeze 6-7 gigs into 4.38 gbs. That's extreme.You've got some quality media there,so I'd guess you could increase the speed for data.
I go with burn speed on your media to how your burner best performs with them.Switch media,you'll want to test them again.
What is the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?
There's several programs out there to test for errors on your backups:
Lite-on: Has a utility called K-probe
Benq: Has a utility called qscan,but I can't get it to work.
Plextor: Has a utility called plextools.
Nero had a speed test.It don't work with my OEM Nero.
Dvdinfopro also has a scanning test. It may not work with some drives,but they have a free version. Just d/l the free version with adverts:
That trial don't last very long. It seemed like I kept downloading it once a week until I purchased the program.
Those verbatim should code out as MCC-004 and are very good. I go 8x on them and all I do is movies. Data should be no problemo.
Memorex outsource their drives. I'm not sure who built that one,but they do have some good manufacturers for their drives. Not so fortunant for the blank dvd media, LOL!
