Dumb question about DVD's

I keep reading about using a "high quality media" disk. Is there a big difference between which DVD I choose? I've used regular Memorex DVD's for a short time and never had any problems. Just wondering if someone could clear that up for me.

Hi IVIyst, welcome to AD. Memorex are possibly the worst choice of media, there are countless threads covering the pitfalls of using this media. They are manufactured by CMC Mag and their use is very "hit and miss".
I would advise to try some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and burn at around 4X.
You might have arun of success with your Memorex but undoubedly you will soon strike problems.

Seriously? I've probably burned about 40 - 50 DVD's with Memorex and haven't had a single problem that wasn't my error. I'll have to keep those in mind next time I buy DVD's. Is the price of those too much more?

Not really. Verbs go on sale quite often at Best Buy for $14.99 for a 50 pack, which is a pretty good deal.
I agree with gwendolin, I would definately stay away from the Memorex.

You could burn a 100 more and not run into problems BUT playability over a long term period can become an issue. Yes, it is common for Memorex media to have immediate playback issues but if you've avoided this--congrats, because you're in the minority. BUT, you still have the potential issue of long term playability.
You could think this is all a bunch of hooey but you've seen the threads, countless pages, and all the horror stories. You should always stick to the trust media.
Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

i have used memorex in the past they work at first but a few months down the road they fail

The biggest problem with Memorex is they can't be trusted. They purchase blank media from many different manufacturers and put the Memorex name on them. In some cases you may get a good batch of media, but most of the time they turn out to be manufactured by CMC MAG which are the bad ones. You can't be sure which ones you will end up with. Best to stay clear of them and stick with a well known brand. The price difference isn't enough to worry about. If you watch for sales the good ones can actually cost less than the Memorex.

Actually I guess I lucked out. I bought some DVD's last week because I was starting to run low. I just finished up my last disk on my spindel and was looking at my new disks and guess what, they're Verbatium. Got them at Office Depot for $14.99. Good deal to me.
