Hi dear experts! Here's a newbie who's got the same problem as many others. However I've followed every step that I've seen recommended.
________________________________

Here are the facts in the case:

1. Usually I use DVD Decrypter for burning but suddenly it failed. Moved to my second choice: Nero, it failed and I got a log.

2. I've used Memorex 8x DVD+R for a good while with no problem. The other night a got the illegal disc failure while burning from my good ol' batch of Memorex.

3. Tried Verbatim 16x still the same log.

4. Upgraded the firmware for the DVD writer to the latest available.

5. Went through the ASPI routine and fixed that. I actually had an error mess for it first when checking with Aspichk but after using Forceaspi Aspichk says it's good.

6. Burning CDr works fine, reading DVD media works fine.

7. Tried writing data as well as iso-files with the same result.

8. I also cleaned the lens.

9. Checked DMA successfully.

Is there anything left to do to make it work or should I rip the Philips driver out and let it sail from my 3rd floor balcony?

Could anyone please help me?
My Nero log looks like this:

For some reason your log keeps indicating a CD is present, its obviously NOT recognizing DVDs for some reason.

This is what I am questioning

This error means that your burner doesn't like your discs...Since your firmware is the most current according the RPC1 and you've already admitted to using Memorex, my suggestion would be to try another brand as your good 'ole Memorex's have let you down. Try some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan).

Try the Nero update and then both brand blanks.

Thanks for your reply. Where in the log do you see that it does interpret the media as a CD?

Is there any known fix for it?

As I said, the driver plays dvds without any hustle.

//

Oh, another answer while I was writing. Thanksalot.

About the version of Nero: it has worked perfectly and still does when writing cds. I've also tried DVD Decrypter which won't burn either. That goes for both Memorex and Verbatim.

As I said, I've already tried Verbatim (hailed by most) but it won't do it either. Any more suggestions?

Its sitting right here, same place as my post above.

You were told to change Nero version once now for the second change to version of Nero recommended by loco.

Oh sorry, was a bit quick in reading. Well spotted.

Do you have any suggestion what might have happened?

Hardware or software?

Anyone heard of this before?

I'll update Nero, and try blanks and then get back to you guys. Thanks alot, at least I'm on the right track now.

I checked some other logfiles from other threads and found that the info about

"Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD)"

does occur in several other posters logs. So is this the really the matter? The drive sounds like it doesn't find the disc alright although the info I get from Nero states that I have a DVD+R disc inserted in the drive before starting the burning process.

Further suggestions badly needed or I'll go crazy here.

I'm afraid that the burner just doesn't like those discs, and for some reason the MID isn't showing on the log.

Please DL DVD Identifier and run both Memorex and Verbatim's and post back the results.

Update:

Edit: you beat me to the clock... but here's what I wrote while you posted... I'll try your newest suggestions.

/I saw in another thread that there's a line or two that's showing if the media is read alright. I found these are missing in my log. It only says: "DVD+R" and nothing about what kind it is.

Does this point towards a firmware problem? Although Verbatim seems to be the shit, maybe my stack is faulty?

I'll have to buy a number of different discs and start from there. Any input is appreciated./

Was that good or bad news?

Can't try any Memorex as I'm out of them. Threw the last one in the garbage the other day... But I'll buy some new tomorrow. Now I've gotta go to bed. It's past midnight here in the cold north of Europe.

Night.

I run in DVD mode alright. No doubt about that. Several other posters with the same issue has also the "CD"-info in their logs so I wouldn't think that it makes the big difference.

Also does not DVD Decrypter - ever stable - burn for me.

@Gwen

No quams with the CD thing, as of right now I don't know what the problem is...so anything will help.

@hoppla

MCC's are good, definately Verbatim....don't go and buy anymore Memorex, trust me. Dig one out of the trash and run it through the identifier.

Good night, sleep tight and may there be answers for you in the morning.

Edit: How about a DVDD log, got one to post?

But please don't make me go through my trash... I'll try some DVD RW tomorrow instead.

May there be answers tomorrow.

I don't have an option to burn at any other rate. It's only 2.4x that's possible. The disc says 16x. But I see what you mean. Don't think that's the issue tho.

Next?

Something is strange, you say the disc is 16X whereas DVDDecrypter indicates it as 2X, I dont know why this is but you said DVDDecrypter stopped working suddenly, maybe someone can enlighten me.

It looks like there are some things not checked off in the Nero burn page
Quote:
TOCType: 0x00; Session Closed, disc not fixated
it should say session closed, disc fixated.
and
Quote:
DVD high compatibility mode: No
Make sure the box is checked that says Finalize disc no further writing is possible
and turn on the DVD high compatiblity mode.

That was from burning rom. You have to click on the options tab to see some of this stuff.
It might not help, but that was all i could see that might be a problem.
Also you could try a burn without aspi. Just use the killaspi program, and it will remove the aspi layers. Sometimes a new aspi installed over a corrupt one will cause problems. Its better to have no system aspi, or a working one, but not a corrupted one. Nero didnt report anything wrong with aspi according to that log. You can also check aspi with Nero info tool

It should come up green if aspi is ok, yellow if system aspi is missing, and red if system aspi is corrupted.

Also there could be something wrong with the image/movie you were trying to burn. Is the failure on this movie or file only?
Check out alkohol's guide on using Nero:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256436
Its a good thread, even if you think you know how to do a rip, its best to look thru that to see if you are having problems with some of your settings.
Also a blank disc needs to be in the drive before you open up the burn page, or it will not list the correct burn speeds in the burn pulldown menu.
Thats all i can see that might be a problem.

Thanks for your input!

I'll go thru your checkpoints when home from office tonight. The aspi has gone thru killAspi so the old one was removed. I also believe that it came out green in Nero.

I'll try the High compability and No further writing possible (usually has this option of course but I slipped in those logs).

And if this don't work, what are the odds that the drive is fried? Nearly 1:1 i guess.

Hi all again.
Tonight I went thru the last steps that max could think of. The result was negative.
Could not obtain any new discs today so I erased an old TDK DVD+RW (Taiwan made) and tried to burn the image on that one. Sad/happy to say that it works like a charm! Happy because my burner is somewhat ok. Sad that I have a stack of markets' finest Verbatims to no use.

Guess I'll have to track down a brand that I can use. Could it be then that the firmware for my Philips SDVD6004 doesn't support the discs?

Anyway, thanks for your support and efforts to help me, while the solution was waiting in a cupboard right behind me.

Burn on y'all!
