I was recently given a DVDrip of Seven Swords. When trying to play it, it was in Cantoneese. Where can I get subtitles for the movie and how do I put them onto the dvd so they will work sucessfully in my DVD player?
if the rip doesn't have English audio or subtitles then you can't enhance your DVD rip to have them.... unless you have the original disk and that has the English audio or subtitles in it! what program do you use to burn it? some programs show the audio channels and will tell you if it is ENGLISH and also will show you the subtitles that you can check off for ENGLISH! Sooooo what program do you use?
It is deffinately not englsih. Also it wasnt off the original DVD and Im pretty you can aquire subtitles and add them yourslef becuase I remember doin it before I just can't remember how. Thanks for your help. BTW I use Nero burning rom 7 to burn
Downloaded the VirtualDub Subtitler Filter, copy subtitler.vdf into the \PLUGINS directory under the VirtualDub program directory. If the PLUGINS folder is not there you can just create one.
Step 2: Edit the subtitle file
Even if your subtitles are already in SSA (SubStation Alpha) format, this step is required to customize the subtitles aspect. Subtitle Workshop will be used here to convert the subtitles to SSA and/or edit their font aspect and position in the output video.
Open the subtitles with Subtitle Workshop in File>Load Subtitles.
Then....Go to Settings > Output Settings...
The Output Settings dialog will open up
Select Substation Alpha (*.ssa)
The recommended subtitle fonts are Arial, Arial Narrow and Tahoma, usually Bold. The font color should be a brigth one (yellow or white), and the secondary colors should be black. At the Others tab at the same dialog, you can customize several additional settings.
Now you can save the subtitles from the File menu. When saving make sure to double click the SSA format.
Step 3: Apply the subtitles with VirtualDub
After you have created your SSA subtitles, start VirtualDub and open the target movie. We'll recompress the movie with the subtitles in this last step. Note: There is no way to apply the subtitles without recompressing the video.
Go to the Video menu and select Filters.
Click the Add... button.
Select the "subtitler" filter and click OK.
After you click OK, the Subtitler Configuration dialog should appear. Click the "..." button and browse to the SSA file you have previously saved with the SubStation Alpha editor.
If you want to use the original subtitle file word wrapping mode, select Manual word wrapping. You can also use the Automatic or Smart word wrapping modes, but when playing the video and applying Pan&Scan feature, long subtitle lines won't fit the video viewable area.
Click Show Preview to see how your subtitles will appear in the encoded video.
Step 4: Save and encode the video file
To save the video file with the applied captions, we will have to recompress the video and leave audio stream as is.
Under Video select Full Processing Mode, and under Audio select Direct Stream Copy.
Go to Video > Compression. Double click the DivX 5 codec (thats why we need the DivX 5 Codec)
Finally go to File > Save As AVI... and enter a file name for the output video. The encoding process will start and your output video will include the subtitles permanently.
This is not my guide it is partly someone elses work.
The directions you provided for adding subtitles look good, but I am having some problems. The subtitle file is not recognized by the Subtitle Workshop; the subtitle file is a .sub file. So when I try to load the file I receive an error message " not recognized file or bad file ". I am trying to add subtitles to the movie Old Boy, which is in Korean. Any suggestions?
If you have a MicroDVD .sub file then convert it to an .srt file so you can open it with Subtitle Workshop. There are lots of programs to do this. The one that I use is Subtitle Converter.
This program is in German but it's very easy to use. In the top window select the "Datei öffnen" button to select your file to open. In the "Files of type" option select *.sub then open your .sub file.
A small notepad like window with the subs will open, just minimize it or move it out of the way. In the bottom half put a dot in the SubRip Format, then hit the "Konvertieren" button. Give a filename for the new .srt file. Then you will have an .srt subtitle file which you can load into Subtitle Workshop.
By the way, I watched "Old Boy" about 3 weeks ago. Very depressing and in my opinion it's not that good of a movie, but hopefully you'll have a better experience with it :) If you want a really fun time with Korean cinema try "My Sassy Girl". Comedy, Romance, it's got it all!
you can use VSO DVIXtoDVD it has a Subtitles feture, its a great Program, i Love it, its one of the best, and its simple...
