This could be a very dumb question, but im asking out of curiosity.
My father and I was talking and we wondered if there was way if you could access lets say "my computer to his"(seperate houses)WITHOUT going through some kind of private website or such?A friend of his has a private site(p2p site) where we can access certain files through that but we was wondering if its possible to set it up to where we can get access to each others computer other than that way ,just him & I. I've done google searches and whatever but either this isnt possible or I'm just wording it wrong,if anyone has any idea your thoughts would be very appreciated.
thx in advance.

you could setup an FTP server, a web server, good old VNC or remote desktop... theres plenty of ways to do this kinda stuff but you will only be able to transfer files at the speed of your internet connection

the safety depends on your own computers... if they are firewalled up then they are all secure.
FTP server is probably the easiest to setup it literally involves downloading a program and just leaving it running.
to do any of the stuff u want to do though id suggest you visit http://www.no-ip.com and sign up for a free account and get your free hopto.org address and download the no-ip client.
do that and then post back here and ill tell you what to do next

okay, well once youve got the no-ip program and youve set it up to update your hopto.org address, that address will then point to your computer. so if you were to type "whatever.hopto.org" into internet explorer it would attempt to access your computer. however you wont be able to access your computer until you have some kind of a server running on it. the easiest one to do is an ftp server. go to google.com and have a search for a free ftp server program, download and install one and set your ftp folder in the set up options.
from then on all you need to do is run no-ip and your ftp client and you will be able to access your files over the internet by going to ftp://your.hopto.org (whatever your hopto.org is)

OK got evrything installed & both no-ip & program called cuteFTP7 pro also vnc(thx btw ecknight).
NOW i'm officially lost, lol.Dont even know where to begin on setting this up,so i gotta few questions.
Sypher you said "set your ftp folder in the set up options" what did you mean?
Also when trying to access my files over the net what do i type in address bar,my default gateway address or my ip?
The cuteftp has a connection wizard and it says enter a host address or ftp url what exactly do i type here?
lastly,do i have to forward any ports at all or anything like that?
Sry for being such a pain,im not very computer savvy thx for your patients and help.
