Hi...I have several movies that I've backed up, and I now like to make backup copies of them so I can store one at my house and one at my parents.

Everytime I try to duplicate the backup however, I get an error midway through the burn. Nero duplication failed, and DVD Shrink, which was the program used to make the original backup also fails to even analyze the DVD.

The error that I get from nero says that the burn failed due to a read error.

Is there any way that I can duplicate a DVD from its duplicate?

Thanks,
Sage

I tried a search...maybe I don't know how it's been said before, but I am burning from Teon media to Teon media. The discs work fine in every stand alone player I have tried them in. If this has been covered, I guess just give me an idea of what I should search for.

Using Nero to try duplicating again and it's just stuck at 57% and saying Unrecoverable read error at LBA 1306704 etc...

Thanks again,

@sagew, Friend when I back-up a back-up I simply use Decrypter in Iso read/write format. Using Taiyo Yuden, and Verbs I never have an issue except for those that I had used Intercopy 3...once in a while it simply would not read the disk properly. Beyond that no problems. Try Decrypter and see what you get. Hope this helps.

hmmm...I've always used TDK disk and haven't had a problem with them yet. I'll take it that you *cough*cough*don't live in the u.s.*cough*cough*and have deycrypter*cough*cough*and you have already tried that too, of course if you live in the u.s. you already know it's a no-no.

Try checking some of the guides too.

56% and then I get unrecoverable read error. This is not fun.

Are you "on" the computer while trying to this?

no...I wrote that message immediately after I started and let it have full system resources...It seems that it always fails at around 56-57 %. Seems like this could be where the second layer originally began?

This is getting to be troublesome. Maybe it's just this media?

Oh...and I'm not computer illiterate, so alot of the common problems are probably not a factor.

I'm going to try and put the disc into my burner and see if maybe it's just the Dell 16x reader that is causing issues.

Thanks again...

So you have 2 dvd drives, if I have read your 1st post correct, you have only tried "shrinking" on the one drive only.

Now you are attempting to use your 2nd drive? Try shrinking with that one.

Are you doing disk to disk copy or disk to hdd?

I have tried both. Initially I tried disk to disk, then when I had problems, I tried disk to harddrive, thinking that might solve the problem. Still no luck, and everytime the read fails at 56-57%. The disc to disc burn also failed at the same percentage.

The strange thing is, the media plays fine in a stand alone player.

Let me know if you all have any other ideas.

your problem is most likely due to the media your original backups are on. Teons are not a very good choice. If you value your backups switch to better media such as verbatim, taiyo yuden, sony, maxell mij, or fuji mij. Here's some media codes for teon.

Teon DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG E01)
Teon DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Teon DVD+R 4x (Philips C08)
Teon DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)

cmc mag as you probably know is landfill material and known for causing problems like what you are having. You can check the media code of your teons with dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

@sagew, I'm with Mort on this as anytime this has occured in the beginning of my backing up days it came down to some cheap media. CMC are not good and especially when trying to back up a backup. Change to great media and see how that improves the backing up.

From one hand you talking about shrink and from the other you talking about layer break. Theese two things are not in common. The fact that a disc ia playable has nothing to do with the rip of the same disc (that's what bup's files standing for except from the ifo's).
So decide do you want to fit a DVD-9 to a DVD-5 disc or just make 1:1 copy? The answer is depending of your choise...

Trying to re-rip a backup copy that is on a teon?
Re-Ripping on the fly?

Holy Moly!!!!

This is a prime example of the difference between crappy media and quality media.

Too many read errors, too many crc errors! Burner quality can also be a factor. Take my brand spanking new HP640c. For a vigorous test on backups, I re-rip them. None of my HP backups would re-rip to hard drive.Too many error. That is why I no longer backup dvds on that drive. Strictly reading and lightscribing only.

Best thing to do is break out your originals and back them up again, this time with quality media and safe 4x speed.Verbatim/Taiy yuden/and Maxell hitachi.

If that is not possible, try DVD Decrypter. You'll have to set it up to rip in BRUTE FORCE and IGNORE all read errors.May work, but very slim chance.

My formula to re-ripping backups- On the fly or safer way,on your hard drive. The object is to keep your errors as low as possible on your first copy:

1) Quality media: Ty/Verbatim/Hitachi/Ritek
2) Safe 4x burn speed-burn to the speed that your media has fewer issues. You need to run PI/PO error scans. Some newer quality drives perform better at 8x and 12x burn speeds.
3) Quality Burner.Up to date firmware.
4) Backup target of 4360 mbs.Keeps burn from reaching the outer edge.
5) No paper/sticker labels
6) No multi-tasking
7) Keep hard drive defragged
8) Keep pc virus/spyware free and registry clean.

sagew: What's the brand name/model#/and firmware version of your DVD-RW drive?

Hey
I had the same problem with backing up backups. What I found out was that if I watched the original Backup I saw little skips and jumps in the movie. Skips that most people would not notice. When you back up movies it seems to me that the software that is used is very sensitive to that. Then when burning the backup, it gives you those errors.
one more thing, there is a option before burning in DVD Shrink if you use that where you can encode & burn in low or high priority.

Hope it helps
mn

It has taken a long time to discover the many different ways to burn, scan, ripp, download, cut, paste and protect.
Never give up on new ways and new solutions
