Hi i was wondering if any one could help me. ive been stuck on this same problem for quite a while, gave up then decided to face this. Okay my problem is that i have many avi. movie files that i have downloaded and i would like to burn them on to these unbranded dvd-r discs which i have bought. I used dvd identifier to identify what they are and here are the results from the identify:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:TTH02]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [TDK Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [TTH02]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V4.3.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]

I have tried to burn the movies on to the dvd-r discs using Winavi to convert the avi file to dvd format (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS) and then i used nero burning rom to burn them using the dvd video option.

I have also tried using nero vision to add the files, make a menu and let nero vision transcode the avi to dvd format and burn to disc by itself. But the same problem came with this method too.

But after they were burnt, they played fine on power dvd on my laptop but they did not play on any of my stand alone dvd players. I thought my dvd discs were not compatible with my players but i copied a genuine dvd on to one of these discs and they played fine on my stand alone player. This made me think that they must be compatible with my player and the source of the fault may lie in the way i convert and burn the avi. file.

One thing is that one of my friends standalone player was able to play these dvds but only him no one else.

Is there anyone who could give me a definate guide on how to overcome this problem. This would be a great help. Anyone who has had this problem and overcome this, please help.

Thanks

Unfortunately the discs you have chosen are NOT the best quality and more than likely the problem. I would suggest you try a better quality disc such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

If they play on your friends player then it IS a media problem, no doubts.

For future reference check out the guide by alkohol in my sig.

I dont understand how they would play perfectly well with no problems when i copy another dvd and play them on the dvd player. Does that not mean they are compatible.

They're not sounding too compatible. Players can be very picky wth media and as gewn said TDK ain't the best. Your better off using the brands mentioned. I mainly use Taiyo Yudens and have almost zilch in compatibility issues on many different players.
Two more things to try on the TDK's - don't burn at max speed - try taking it down some. Also make sure your burner's firmware is up to date.
