Computer wont recognize dvd to burn

Hey guys I got one more question. I have had some problems with Wallace and Gromit, Barbie as Rapunzel, Diary of a mad Black woman, Fantastic 4. So far these are the only ones. When I put them in my computer's dvd/cd my computer acts like they are not even there. When i go to dvdfab it or try AnyDVD, I get a prompt saying no dvd in the drive? I have tried looking in my e drive and it shows nothing, but the dvd is in there. There is nothing wrong with the dvds, and my computer just got checked out by STAPLES (WHERE I BOUGHT IT A MONTH AGO, STILL VERY NEW) a week ago, I was making sure everything was ok, and they said everything is running fine. I finally did get Fantastic 4 to read one time, and got it burnt fine, but I held in the shift button when I was closing the drive. It wont work again nor on any other dvds. I really dont know what to do and am getting frustrated. Please if anyone can help me it will be appreciated. Jennifer

So you can't open them with your copy programs, AnyDVD and DVDFab Decrypter...but you did manage to get Fantastic 4 to open by holding down the Shift key while inserting the movie into the drive.
You stated so far these are the only ones. Do any other movies load normally, or is this happening with every movie you try?
Have you tried playing the movie on your PC? That will sometimes get things going.
If you can't play the movie then there is something incorrect with your computer.
I'd like some more info on your setup so if you would please, download this Nero Infotool, run it, then save and post the results.
There will be quite a bit of information.

Ok, my copmuter is fine, I just got it checked out a week ago. These dvds i am having problems with will play in the dvd player, xbox, ect... they just will not play in my computer. When I put them in my computer the light on my dvd drive does not blink, my E DRIVE shows no dvd present. I have tried AnyDVD to see if it could recognize it and it says no dvd in drive, as does dvdfab, dvdshrink. I have burnt 20 or so successfully and have had all of the other dvds automatically show up and play on the PC. I really do not know what else to tell you, I can tell by the response that is probably is not a common problem. My computer is only 1 month old, so I did take it in to where I had bought it and they did an exstensive check on it and said all was good, I told them the problem and they said maybe it was the copyright on the disks? I dont know and will appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank Jennifer

Commercial DVDs are supposed to play in your computer. You should be able to put the movie in and watch it, regardless of the copy protection.
The first thing that happens is the drive reads the DVD, if this is not occuring then trying to open AnyDVD or any other program is not going to work. It is not a problem with the DVD software.
Having to hold the shift key down indicates a system problem, more than likely the drive.
This is a not so common problem, but one that has certainly come up before. Most of the time it is a bad pressing of a specific movie. In your case something else is occuring because it is happening with several movies.
It is hard to tell because I do not have the system information I requested.
This would tell me things like:
Drive manufacturer
Firmware version
IDE buss jumper settings
ASPI layer info

Your DVD drive is bad if it will not recognize commercial DVDs. The only other possibility is that you have several bad DVDs, which is doubtful. I'd take it back again with a couple of the movies that won't play and let them fix it.

Is that DVD-RW drive an HP?
Sounds like the dvd-rom part of the drive may be bad.

No, it locks my computer up. I contacted HP and went through every stupid test they tried to give my computer (2 1/2) hours on the phone just to re-format it 2 and now they are sending me a new hard drive. I am not sure if that is going to help or not but I will keep you guys informed one way or another.

OK, I got the new hard drive and have no problems loading any of the dvds on there, my computer now automatically recognizes them and load perfectly. Thank you guys for all your info. Just goes to show just because something is brand new doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with it. Thanks again Jennifer

FYI I had the same trouble with my Pioneer DVDRW DVR-K15. After burning backups of about five movies it just stopped recognizing any DVD media. HP is sending a new drive, but I worry that if I try backing up again the same thing will happen. Hoping I just got a bad DVDRW drive. Mine locked up and quit after Fantastic 4. It does still recognize software and audio cds...

I had this issue aswell. Let me ask you. Did you install that DVD-R into that computer or did it come with it installed already? I was told that if you install your own DVD-R it can create that issue. I had this problem with my i-pod cd though, never with a DVD. But I know exactly what you are talking about.

Hey, fasfrank, I have the same issue as lazy64. I have a JLMS XJ-HD166S and it isn't aware of any media I put in it all of the sudden -- store-bought DVD, homemade DVD, audio CD, blank. I updated the firmware to DS1E today but no difference. If you're still game, I could run the Info Tool as you suggested to lazy64.

One thing you can try is go to system properties,harware, device manager, and dubble click on cd/dvd drives and right click on drive and uninstall reboot and windows will re-install worked for me when I had same problem.

Sure, I'd like to see it. One option, if you are running Win XP, is to do a system restore back to a time when the drive still worked. Even if that does not correct the problem it would be good to know that.
You may want to unplug the drive, boot, shut down, plug the drive in, and boot. Windows may recognise it again.
BTW I really like my JLMS 166. I have some hacked firmware installed and it is awsomely fast.
One thing to keep in mind is that DVD-ROM drives are cheap nowdays and replacing it or at least having a spare on hand is not a big expense.

Thanks, bmccoy1! I tried that but still no good. I think I have a bigger problem, though. I just noticed the drive starts to spin up, then stops, then starts to spin up, then stops. That's new behavior but I think the drive is on it's way out.

Thanks, fasfrank. I think I'll skip the restore piece, as the last time I used that drive was about the first of this year. There has been a lot of water over the dam since then. You're absolutely right about the price of DVD-ROM drives these days -- I think I'll just pronounce this one dead and go forward. Thanks again!
