When I split entire original DVD movie releases onto two backup disks, I use the original 321 Studios DVD-X-Copy version 1.5.2 with complete success to this day. This was the final version in the developement of the original release of DXC. It won't do episodics but I hate TV anyway, I'm a movie person. It has trouble with some dual layer Special Features, disk II type disks from Two Disk Special Editions type DVD releases. But I just use CloneDVD for those.

Later came "Express" and even later "Platinum". I NEVER, EVER compress so I had no use for those, but from what I read on the AD DXC threads, trying to get them to work correctly was about as enjoyable as vacationing in Iraq. Abominations both, IMHO.

I use DXC 1.5.2 with AnyDVD to eliminate encryption issues.

Don't even try to buy 1.5.2 because, to the best of my knowlege, you can't get it anymore, let alone activate it. Ireland would know this for sure. I cloned my entire backup rig's HDD, and kept it as a safety, so I would never have to face a reactivation nightmare or disappointment or even have to deal with those offshore dunces who took over 321 activations when they went under.

RIP Michael Moore. And thanks for not keeping your promise that you would eliminate activation requirements if 321 got forced out of business! We all gave you alot of money and support! You were the one stupid enought to take on the MPAA in court instead of just releasing a css ripper-free version in the first place!

I am transitioning to all dual layer burning soon so I'll be saying aloha to my faithful friend 1.5.2 soon.

Best regards,
Whisperer

I dont' use DVDXCopy anymore..... there are better, and free, ones out there! Try DVDShrink and DVDFab Decrypter! both are free ..... I don't use those anymore either because my favorite ones are DVDFab Platinum, DVDRemake followed by DVDREbuilder Pro with CCE..... but you want free programs..... Shrink and DVDFab Decrypter is the way to go! and here are some guides to help you learn how to use them:

I have DVD X Copy Platinum and DVD X Platinum (basically the exact same software but by the company who bought out the stuff from 321 went they went under). I use them occasionally, but most of the time I use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Free and they work like a charm.

Hi pernal

Alongside DVD Decrypter/ImgBurn which I use to do all my Dual-Layer burns, I am still using DVD X Copy Platinum 4.0.4.15 RF with AnyDVD to copy any of my movies that will fit to a Single Layer 4.7GB disc.

This combo has always worked and it has not failed me once as yet.

Hope this answers your question.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Regards

BTW, as of today, I am now officially a "member" of AD - many thanks to all those who have helped me with my various problems here on the AD forums.

Please keep up the good work - it's much appreciated.

The problem with this software, is that it needs activating online. I bought 321 studios X-copy products, was happy with them, then whenever I wish to reformat I have to activate it online, I have to fill out a ticket & submit it. It doesn't take long, but I still have to do it EVERY time, no matter the amount of activations that I am supposed to have.
I really resent having to beg for activations. I paid an awful lot of money to the Moore foundation, he promised that we would get the activation code if the company went down, we got NOTHING!
If you have to activate software online (I reformat every 6 months) that you paid for, then you have bought nothing. Why should you have to activate, why not give a reg key like SlySoft? You pay a company for goods, then it is up to them if you can use it. That is the wrong way round in my books!
You have to ask permission to use Alcohol software now, if I'd known that when I bought it, I would not have bothered. It's a rip off as far as I am concerned. I made my feelings clear on the Alcohol forum, their answer was basically "If you don't like it, don't buy it". That attitude sucks, it just shows the contempt that these companies have for their customers, once they have you money, you can just go to hell!
SlySoft is the way to go, they update regularly, welcome constructive criticism & most important to me, treat their customers with respect.

WORDS OF WISDOM

People are discovering that when you buy any product that is subject to "activation", you haven't really bought anything.

Good Grief.........when are people going to stop bashing ROBERT H. Moore? Just put your feet in his shoes for 1 day, how many of you would survive???? I hope he is finally getting on with his life and the past is behind him.

Mr. Robert H. Moore, I wish you, your family, and x-employees well. Thank-you for trying to fight for us!

Hang on a minute here, I bought my software in good faith, he said he would give us the activation file, he didn't. I paid a lot of money for my X-copy products. Why didn't he give us the file, it would have been entirely possible? Anyway as far as I am aware it is his relatives who have sprouted their wings & making Video vault etc. The interfaces of these re-vamped software are way too simlar for it not to be true. I know someone who knew the staff at UK HQ for 321 studios.

In its' day it was good, overpriced, but good. I just wanted the activation code, that's all! This new software, video vault & next copy (or whatever) still needs activation! That is not progress. If I pay for something I want to use it when I want, not when someone tells me I can!
What happens if video vault etc goes under? $149 is a lot of money for software that you cannot use! If it did not need activating, then I would not have a problem with it, why do they insist on this control over the consumer? Why not take SlySofts lead? Why will they not treat the customer with a bit of respect?
So if that is Moore bashing, then tough! All I wanted was my code..
Do you see my point mackdl?

@pulsar,

I paid good money for my software, just like everyone else. It didn't do everything it was supposed to, but then how can you work out the bugs and fight the big boys too?

Activation is just a way to protect your work. I use Windows XP, like most of the world. Everytime I update, I have to go through hoops to authenticate. Do I like it? NO WAY!

Truthfully, it is the MPAA and the RIAA that people should direct their anger to. What happens when they manage to shut down Slysoft? Who are you going to be mad at?

I totally agree with you pulsar. There was a breif time when there wasn't any limitations on activations after 321 crashed - then it was taken away from us. You are so right about all the money we spent on their sofware($70 for Xpress and $100 for Platinum ). I did pick up 321rip and 321gone at afterdawn way back when . I was just wondering if I could reinstall it on my brother-in-laws pc and was worth the trouble of activation . Thanks for the tibbits of information . It was the first and secound dvd burning software I purchased when I started burning dvd's about four years ago and my wore out nec1300.

I am only upset at the restrictions that activations produce. It is treating the consumer as someone who is going to give their software to anyone, I do not do that.
I agree we should direct anger at the businesses, at movie stars who are happy to be paid $40million, while children are starving, big business who drive small businesses out of business, there is a lot wrong with capitalism, greed & people.
If I buy something I expect to be able to use it freely. It is not my fault that other people are greedy, don't blame me for that!
If you bought a car & you had to go to the dealers for a key & ask permission to use it every couple of months, would you be annoyed? I would.
The only greedy people are the film companies, movie stars, so called sports stars etc. They only go into the business to make money, they are full of their own self importance. As long as you have a full stomach, a roof over your head & a warm bed, you have nothing to complain about. But then greed comes along, keeping up with the Joneses attitude.
Look at the rigmarole surrounding the Oscars, all of these so called important people, they think they are so good. OK they can remember lines, whoop-de-do! How about nurses & teachers, cleaners, are they not important?
So there you go that?s what I think of it all, they are all a bunch of self gratifying nobodies, all out for as much money as possible, the ?look at me, look at me? syndrome.
As for Bill Gates, don?t get me started, so if I complain about not being able to use something I have paid for, don?t have a go at me, have a go at big business , fat cat executives & the shareholders, out to screw us for as much as they possibly can, Moore was in it for money, if you think that everyone who goes into business do it for philanthropic purposes, then you are mis-guided.
I love my job, but I am only there for the money, to pay the bills, to put food on the table, no more no less.

You know what I despise? Having to pay for Windows XP on every machine that I own. I even paid for my son's because he couldn't afford it. That's 3X!!! Wow, and talk about buggy!

What about my antivirus programs? Yup, gotta pay for EVERY machine, and EVERY year.

You know, Mr Robert Moore could be in a lot of trouble if he released a code to us. I read his promise too. I suppose we just have to go through 321 International if we want activations.......like it or not. We all have a choice whether we want to.

My choice is I don't use x-copy, I choose to support SlySoft, Hell I even got CloneDVD mobile, just in case I may need it!
I use AVG for my Anti-virus, works really well, I have Kerio firewall, free version! As for XP, there are ways and means if you do not wish to purchase, but I would never condone such action as it is piracy!
I do not mind paying SlySoft, but I do not like having to pay Bill Gates for software that is buggy & constantly under attack from virus writers & hackers. That is only as Windows has crushed the opposition. Lotus 1-2-3 was/is (?) way better than windows version.

I'm just thankful I CAN activate. I also like Clonedvd2, and will most likely purchase after my trial is up. I will still use 4.0.4.15 RF with AnyDvd.

It is a shame that DvdXCopy International does not have a try before buy.

@pulsar,
I'm with you Man! Slysoft is the Best! I have AnyDVD & CloneDVD 2 & plan to buy CloneCD as well! Heck, save the software, save the "key" you have what you paid for for life. No "activations" needed. Besides, I am also a "former" 321 Xcopy user. Slysoft's products are far superior in quality, ease of use and even speed.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Hey(!) Ireland. Nice running into you since we "live" in different neiborhoods nowadays. BTW, your post, at cdfreaks, on re-enabling DMA in XP has reached legendary status(!) and is often provided as a link to answer "slow backups" questions. I think cdf members sometimes wonder "where did that masked man go ..." I never had the heart to tell them that AD is your true kingdom.

If YOU post that you end up liking neXt then I guess that I'll HAVE to pay some attention to it since you have no problem telling it like it is and trashing anything that is bogus. But I too hate activation schemes and my dedicated backup box doesn't even have AV or a FW (conflict avoidance) so I fear hooking it up to the web.

Like I said above I've been using DXC 1.5.2 for my splits except when I run into Sony or Arccoss type block/sector mastering protections that only CloneDVD2 can handle. AnyDVD handles CSS just fine but DXC never anticipated purposeful mastering errors as a protection scheme. But neither did DVD-D, Shrink and even Nero to this day can't handle them without the constant tweeks that Slysoft/AnyDVD provides for continued Nero functionality.

CloneDVD does real nice splits too but (silly) I just love that "Please Insert Disk 2" message that 1.5.2 gives me. Then I just advance my DVDchanger to tray2. CloneDVD just gives me a black screen at the end of disk1. Also 1.5.2 always finds the precise layer break of the original for easy splits, so no juggling to get the right size on disk1 and disk2 like with CloneDVD which will only split at the end of a chapter as the break point. If an original has only a few, very large chapters, getting a split with zero compression on both disks can be a problem.

As far as making backups on dual layer media, CloneDVD, being a file mode transcoder, can't duplicate an original DVD's layer break. Instead it has to invent it's own, which can lead to playback freezups at the 50% layer transition point of the movie (expensive coasters!) with some movies and some players (only sometimes, and also the new release is much better at this now). But with CloneCD's new capabilities to burn 1:1 ISO dual layer backups keeping the precise layer break of the original, I'll soon be doing all dual layer backups. I know DVD-D, in ISO mode, has done that for some time but I never went much for the freewares and DL media was so expensive till just recently. In L.A., Verbatim DL media has reached the price point I have been waiting for i.e. $2.00 a disk, when on sale (my requirement for quality branded SL media is $1.00 or less so $2 for DL media fits my sense of value). I think I'm gonna buy the BenQ 1640 (nice, user accessible bitsetting utility) to cover the hardware side of DL backups.

Ditto pulsar to everything you said. Amazing how some people's words are a mirror of one's own mind.

Best regards,
Whisperer

Everything is so confusing to a person with basic computer skills. There are so many choices and it seems to me that you need a different package for different needs.

I was going to purchase CloneDvd2, but now Whisperer says it doesn't do DL very well. I'm lucky if I can find DL media 3@$9.99 on sale. My Scottish blood won't let me pay that, never mind make coasters. I got upset making coasters learning CloneDvd2 @ $.25 disc Maxell MIJ's.

Thanks arniebear,

I still use 4.0.4.15 RF (no splash screen, browse to the hard drive) I mainly do movie only, I don't do menus as I just use the chapter skip on my remote. Special features, I have the originals anyways. I have quite a few that XCopy wouldn't do and/or play on my Toshiba/Sony.

I'm so impressed with "AnyDvd", that I don't mind giving these great folks my business or recommending to my friends. Still a few things I like about Xcopy that CloneDvd2 doesn't have. Guess you can never have too much in your arsenal???
