Hey! I've been burning movies onto dvd using the above type. But I came across a new type today. Everything is the same, except instead of it being "8x", it was "16x". I looked at the pack for the 16x and it seemed to describe the uses for the discs as being exactly the same as the 8x ones. So can someone please explain the difference to me? If I bought the 16x ones and started burning with them, would it affect quality / make a difference in any other way? Thanks so much :)

No problem at all--Just burn them at a slower speed than 16X--even though they can be burned at 16x, there is a much greater chance of errors--I burn the 16x disks at 6x--not one coaster yet--Have fun!
If it's Nero, it let's you adjust the speed after you select the "burn" button. There is a tab on the right, click on it, and it should give you the current burn speed (which is selectable).
If you use CloneDVD (excellent program), the final screen before you hit "go" on the bottom will show the burn speed (above the "go" button). Again, you can change the speed setting before hitting "go".
I generally burn at 8X, even on 16X discs because of increased chances of errors on the faster (12X-16X) speeds.
smiles21--BurnGod is right--just change the speed on the program that you use--I often use DVD Decrypter and also change the + media to ROM---what program are you using to burn and what type of disks are they?---let us know how you make out--
I generally just use DVD Shrink 3.2 cos I've tried using Nero but things never seem to work for me, and Shrink is so easy to use that I just go with that. In terms of what type of discs they are, I honestly have no idea! Usually when I get to the burn stage through Shrink, the tab "Burn Settings" seems to have the "Book type DVD-ROM" tick box greyed out, so I'm pretty sure I don't get to choose that!
Regarding what BurnGod said, would it be okay for me to continue burning as I have been, which means that my speed probably would be 8x, despite using 16x discs?

No problem--but DVD Shrink is not a burning program--it can be set to use either Nero or Decrypter to burn automatically, but cannot burn by itself--If you have no problems with playing the disks after burning them at 8x then go ahead, but it is generally considered safer to burn at 4x (reduces chance of errors)--have fun--

Okay, so I burned a movie on a new 16x disc (not changing ANY of the settings that I had been burning on 8x discs with) and all seemed to be going well when I watched the movie, until I got about one hour 12 minutes in. Small, kinda squares came on some parts of the screen, and then soon after the scenes jumped and wouldn't play properly etc. BUT then today I started watching again from the scene where it had screwed up last night, and it was fine!! Does the screwing up have something to do with the disc at all? Or was my dvd player just tired? Stuff like that has never happened before to the player, so I'm confused! Not sure whether to re-burn the movie on an 8x disc to be safe, or what? Cos I bought a whole bundle of the 16x discs so just hope that I will be able to use them! Also, checked out the "write speed" under Nero, and apparently I've been burning them at 40x. Does that seem right? Cheers :)

No, you have not been burning at 40X, max would be 16X(Disk speed)--I don't usually use Nero, I use Decrypter to burn mostly or CloneDVD, but generally it is safe to burn a video disk at 1/2 rated speed--(8X for a 16X disk)
