Hi - I require a software that can shrink/reduce a dvd 9 (8.5GB) to DVD 5 (4.7GB), i seem to have tried every single software i think there is in the world but the resulting quality is poor!

I stress empahsis on quality of the dvd, am no expert on this but have tried the many softwares mentioned below, please add comments on specific softwares if anything like bitrates or passes need to be changed on the below softwares that i may try.

Please also reccomend software(s) that should be able to include chapters & subtitles & menus. Below is a list of softwares that i have tried:-

Mediachance DVD Lab Pro
DVD Rebuilder Pro
Ulead DVD Movie Factory 4
Ulead DVD VideoStudio 9
DVD Shrink 3.2
Elby CloneDVD 2.3
DVD Decrypter
Nero 7 Ultra Premium Edition

I would like to re-iterate that I am looking for best quality when shrinking/reducing the DVD. Any reccomendations? Thanks in advance.

DVDRebuilder Pro w/ CCE gives me excellent results. HC encoder is good as well, just slower!! I view a 52 inch Widescreen HDTV. Which encoder did you use with RB?

From my experience I have found no ripping software capable of great quality results when you compress a disk up to 50%.

If I want to back up a 8.5gb DVD-9 disc, I have two options. I either use a DVD-9 DL media to record to (1:1 copy), or split the original contents onto two 4.7gb DVD-5 discs.

Splitting the disc contents onto two is the most cost efficient to me when I go that route, with TY DVD+R discs costing me about 40 cents a piece.

Using CloneDVD2, I copy the movie only, and add the menu to get the chapter searches, and the ocassional commentary, if I decided to include that. Almost always, I get a range of 80-90, and sometimes even greater, giving me great quality results.

On the 2nd disk, I include the menu and all the contents (special features) EXCEPT the movie. I usually get a 100% results - a perfect 1:1 copy of the remaining special features.

Most of the time, I want to watch the movie only, and I have it there on 1 disc. The 2nd disc which contains the special features is still there, for that occasional viewing.

well i have used dvd rebuilder pro using CCE but have left the settings to default...dont know much about tweaking them! i have seen dvd9's reduced to dvd5's with good quality...the programs i use usually give blocks or blur the frames!

is there any other way like changing the format & then reverting back to dvd - like i did try to change it to mpeg4 using Nero digital conversion & the results were excellent but the only problem now is to change it back to dvd! any other format suggestions?

If you are backing up a commercial DVD movie, what's the movie? If we know the movie, it is possible that others have backed that same movie and can provide some info. If it is home movies, you might have to recompress the source with multiple passses.

I had a simular problem with "The Piano" because they put both the Widescreen version and P&S version on the same side. I reauthored the disk so that it did not include the P&S verion. That dropped off 3+ gbs from the size. Looks great now, but before it was VCD quaility.

Below is/are what I primarily used and preferred.

<2> Nero Recode 2 "AA + HQSR + Assign best Quality to Main Movie"
<3> DVD Shrink "DA + AEC + Max Sharp or Max Smooth"

ok - i did manage to get improvement on the quality using dvd rebuilder with CCE - i didnt know how to specify filters for avisynth - now i do :) - i did a 1 pass w/analysis & did a 2 pass however i didnt see much difference in them! but i have another question(s) -

1) are there any other filters for avisynth that can specifically improve the quality of the video?

2) i have 2 movies on 1 DVD9 (e.g spiderman, shrek) - i only want to extract shrek including all its submenus & extras...please reccomend a program that can do this - i have tried it with elby clone dvd 2 but it starts the dvd from the title menu where u can choose spiderman or shrek - i want it to start directly from the shrek menu!

Thanks
