I have noticed that on the past three dual-layer discs I burned with Nero 7 Ultra Edition, I can skip forward or back through chapters, and I can fast-forward through chapters, but if I rewind a track, as soon as it gets to the beginning of the track I am rewinding, it then starts jumping from track to track, rather than rewinding through the next previous track; the rewind button effectively changes to a previous track button as soon as it hits the track boundary.

Pretty weird.

Does anyone know why if this is specific to Nero, why it does this, or a fix?

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any feedback.

Aiko

Nero does its job well when it comes to burning to single layer disks, but needs improvement when it comes to dual layer media. If your going to burn to dual layer media, I would suggest you use DVD Decrypter.

Use decrypter in ISO read mode to rip the files to your HDD in an ISO image format, once complete use decrypter to burn the image to disk using its ISO write mode.

Thanks for the reply.

If I already have a fileset on my HD in a VIDEO_TS folder format ready to burn, what would you suggest I do?

You can get DVD decrypter here..
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/DVD_Decrypter/1011845169/1

DVD decrypter will burn only ISO images to disk, what you need to do is to convert the files in the VIDEO_TS folder into a single file with a .iso extension (an ISO image format), you can do this using a free application called folder2iso.

Once folder2iso is done, run DVD decrypter and insert your blank media and goto: mode-->ISO write. For the source choose the ISO image created and for destination choose your burner, choose 2.4x for a write speed and click on that large icon in the center of the window to start the process.

Here's a guide that will take you thru the entire process, you can also get folder2iso here:

Thanks for all the info and links.

Does the folder2iso process do any re-encoding that has any negatice impact on quality? I would guess not, but need to know.

Thanks again,

No, all it does is make the conversion, which has no impact on video quality.

Thanks. That did the trick! Not only did Decryptor resolve the rewind issue, but it also burned successfully with a brand of DL media that has always failed with Nero.

One last question: I had these files on my HD, but I have a few more discs that have already been burned that exhibit the same problem.

Before I waste time and dual-layer discs, do you think/know if I were to rip the files with decryptor from one of my dual-layer discs that were burned with Nero and have the problem I am trying to resolve and reburn the ripped files with Decryptor, would the new disc work properly, or will the problem be inherent in the files that were burned wity Nero?

No, you would just be duplicating the same problem on another disk. The only way to correct it would be to make another copy using the original DVD.

Bear in mind that I did not rip the VIDEO_TS folder with Nero. The original files were downloaded with that structure, and for whatever reason, when Nero burns them they do not play properly; however, Nero is not re-encoding the files before it burns them, right? So where does this problem lie?

I am trying to understand why the files ripped off the burned DVD back to my HD would be different than the original files that were on my HD?

Thanks for your feedback,

The problem lies with how Nero burns to dual layer disks, so if you have copies that you used Nero to burn with, and you see that there are problems with those copies, re-ripping the copy with decrypter and then burning with decrypter will not make those problems go away just duplicate them again onto a new disk (I could be wrong?, If you're willing to sacrifice a disk then give it a try and see). I believe that you should start over with an original for the backup to be truly problem free using the procedure given.

You are probably right, but i am curious; in the name of science I will probably test it and waste a disc to see.

I wish I had realized there was a problem before I deleted the original files. I knew that the discs played through okay, but didn't realize I could not "rewind"

I will let you know what I find.

Thanks again,
Aiko
