ok on my dvd drive it says dvd+rewritable....does that mean that i cannot use dvd-r discs

No, rewritable means that you can burn DVD's. As far as I know all the dvd burners out there are dual format, meaning that they can burn +/- dvd blank media.

unless your drive states + and - then it will use only one type of disk

If you can only use +R format with your burner you may be able to booktype the +R to DVD-ROM.
