I see when you use deep analysis with extra smooth on shrink the second stage after analysis says its "Encoding" is that a true Encoder or is it a Transcoder with the wrong name? This way it does take appox 1 1/2 hrs but the quality is far better!

it is encoding. transcoding means converting one format to another (mpeg to avi). with DVDs the format stays in mpeg-2/4, it just re-encodes it at a lower bitrate

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

I really don't notice a difference using deep analysis but using the settings for either maximum sharpness or maximum smoothness (depending on the % of compression needed) do help and don't add much if any time to the encoding process.
