Is it a good idea to give the laser a rest after several burns?

I've been burning 3 or 4 data DVD's at a time on my LG external 16x burner then letting it rest for a half hour before doing another 3 or 4 burns. Started with 110GB's of data files on the HD. Now I'm down to about 60gb & still burning.
Do LG & Plextor DVD burners need a rest like this or is it not needed? I don't want to burn out the laser like I did on my Sony internal drive after awhile.
My LG is connected (via USB) to the Sony & my Plextor is internal on a Dell computer.
The LG is a GSA 2166D & the Plextor is a 716-A
By the way which burner does a better job of extended (several DVD's at a time) burning? The LG or the Plextor?

your burner is going to last a couple of years at best so you may use as well use it till it drops around about 3000+ discs depending on how good you are.I do 15 to 20 in a hit but its really up to the individual if they want to rest it

How long do you go before burning the next disc? 15 or 20 in a row? Wow!!

well it takes 15 mins for the 1st and every other one is 9 mins, so i guess about 150 mins in a row all up.The best i have done is 60 in a hit and thats like 4 or so hours

@andmerr....... when do you have time to write and help people out here in AfterDawn? with all that burning going on! LOL What is your encoding time? I've recorded 10 or more in a day, and I can't imagine sitting there in front of my computer doing 60 at a shot!! do you have that many backups to record??? wow!!! or are they just burning datta dvds! not movies.

the 60 was a job for my employer, they had an xmas breakup and some one had taken along a video camera and thought it was a good idea to video it.My employer wanted it transferred from video to dvd
As for helping well i have enough ram to burn and post at the same time.I know its not recommended but hey i havent had many issues doing it this way.
It wasnt data trust me, i then had to sit through every one and make sure they worked.Each dvd had 90 mins of footage on it and i was totally bored and over it by the time i got to the end of that project

bratcher if your running a good machine like most in here (per my sig.) you wont have any problems running your burner for a long period of time if you want run your task manager in the perormance mode and keep an eye on your memory and CPU usage and temp. if it gets high shut your machine down a few mintues and boot back up i run 30 or 40 backups at a time with NO problems. running a good power supply with plenty of fans helps lots. BTW mine CPU runs about 2% to 4% and my memory runs about 608MB running two or three burners at a time, no sweat at all lol
as far as your drives Plextor vs. LG, the Plextor wins out there ,top burner on the market

I normally do about 3-4 a day--and I thought that was a lot lol. Anyway, no, I don't let it rest. After one is done, I pop the next one in. I got a Liteon 16x DL, updated and the whole nine yards. BUT, after I am done burning everything, I restart it (if I wanna use it).
Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

For those of you who are doing multiple burns, do you have a huge amount of movies ripped to your HD and then you are burning 2-3 movies at the same time using 2-3 burners? I have done back-2-back-2-back burns, but not any at the same time. I know my systems would never support that -- too old and not enough oomph!

the only real problem you get is you need to defrag your system once a week or at least once a month as the buildup of junk is greatly increased with so many burns

hi,
i have my 1X burner and it takes 1 hour to burn a disc, i usally just burn non stop if i have to. The way i look at this is they are made to burn who gives if they fail after continous burn afterall they were made to burn. If any brand of burner dies because u burned it to much then that brand of burners is crap.

how do you figure that, if you buy an LG and burn about 10,000 discs and it dies on you, your saying its crap and i'm saying its worn out.I think your putting too much emphasis on what you expect out of your technology

Excuse my "newbieness", but I am assuming that burning 3 on the fly means you have 3 readers + 3 burners, or is it that you are burning 3 at one time that are already on your HD?

I to would like to know how do you burn 2 or more DVDs at once. I have 1 ROM and 2 writers. What should be the minimum processor speed, ram, and free HD space?

tsquare43 i can burn 3 at the same time buring an image from the harddrive or i can use 1 drive as a reader and burn with the 2 other drives at the same time.(on the fly) i have a total of 3 drives.
bigdm ,you need at least 1 gig of ram and a good CPU(per my sig.).to use multiple burners "nero burning rom" can handle that, just check multiple burners hightlight both drives and your off

I have 2GB of ram, a 480W Antec power supply, and Nero 6 Ultra, 120GB and 300GB hardrives, and intel pentium 2.6 or 2.8 GhZ. The only application I use from Nero is Recode2 (I guess I could add rom burning software but this happens automaticly within Recode2). If my system is okay, could you give a little more detail on using my ROM to read two DVDs and then have them sent to separate writers. I burn 1 disc at a time but there have been instances I wish I could have been ablt to burn 2 at a time.

iam burning the same file or dvd NOT two different files or dvds so i can burn three of the same file at once or use one drive as a reader and burn on the fly to 2 burners (same file) i dont burn two different files/dvds to different burner
