Hi all,

well trying to save myself some money I thought I would try and fix my PS2. It was loading games really slowly, games skipping and disc read errors. Previously I had the PS2 chipped with a Modbox v2.1. Everything was working fine with the original DVD's but the kids always want more! Anyways today I decided to try and adjust the PS2 first using the white cog at the top of the laser but this didnt do anything. Then I went onto the Laser pots......big mistake I beleive. Instead of leaving the laser in its 4 little screw box I undid the screws.....the ones with the rubber underneath. I know now I should have just turned the PS2 upside down. I found this website which shows you the pots I adjusted:
http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserPS2.htm
Mine is the V5/6 laser with the green and pink labels. It advises you that the normal settings for the CD and DVD resistance is 1200 for CD and 1400 for DVD. Trouble is it doesnt tell you which pot is for DVD or CD. Pink or green?? I'm not bothered about the CD bit but the DVD's are important. Further more on removing the four screws with the rubbers underneath I have ruined the thread on one of the plastic inserts where one of the four screws go.......one of the plastic ones. Are these four screws important or do I have some lee-way and can I use a different screw? I have both pots at the minute set at about 1000 ohms. I realise this is a bit low and the games wont load at all.....infact I get the clicking noise again......nothing loads to be exact. Have I ruined the laser or do I have a chance??

The laser you speak of with the pink and grean sticker is an opened face 400R, its been some time since I have seen one but if I remember right its the one closest to the green sticker. However setting both pots at 100ohms should be just fine. You may want to put the white cog back to its original settings or near it. You may have adjusted the laser assembly up or down too much.

How sure are you the problem want originaly with the clone modbo you have installed. The thing with those clone chips is that if any setings are changes or the flash is updated your modbo will become no good and nothing will boot.

Hi,

how do I reset the chip? Like I say it was working just I was sure there was a problem with the Laser as games took ages to load, would pause all the time. I havent really changed anything but the laser pots. Do I need to do something to the Chip now then? Also like I say I took the whole laser carriage out using the Four screws with the rubbers mounts. Are these four screws an adjustment in themselves or is that ok what I have done? One of the threads is now broke on the the four mounting screws and I have had to use a normal screw. Could this cause problems?

As long as the deferent screw isnt over or under tightened it shouldnt be a problem, tighten it down to where the head of the screw jsut touches the rubber isolator. Those four screws are not adjustment screws and just secure the laser track assembly to the rest of the laser housing. But if one corner is pulled down more then the rest it will adjust the laser out of camber. If the chip was still booting games but just taking longer then normal to do so then your most likely ok. There is no way to "reset" a faulty modbo once it has gone down. This is why you should stay with the original Infinity over any clone.

Ahhhh.....thanks for that. I appreciate all the replies. I went with the Modbo 2.1 as thats all that was offered at the shop. What do you think could be the problem is then? I mean the unit was working to a degree before I played with the pots. The white cog is where it was before but still the disc turns and I assume its trying to read it but eventually I get disc error. Something I have noticed is that before I would insert a disc with the browser showing and it would automatically play the disc. Now I have to turn the power off and on and then the disc starts to read. If I go through the browser after the power is on and I press X to load the disc it says "no data" and it doesnt even spin. Have I somehow broken the laser. Is there some way for me to test? Maybes I can try again in the morning as it does say that 1400 ohms is perhaps better for a DVD.

Well with my chipped PS2, It was working fine but gradually over weeks and months, games have stopped working and all that happens now is I go on the Browser and I open and close the disk-tray. Then it says 'Reading Disk' for about a second, then it goes off and doesn't load. This happens whenever I open and close the disk-tray with any disk! PS2, PS1, DVD, Non-copied things, ANYTHING! Does anyone know what's up with it and/or how to fix it cos if u do, I'd be really gratefull if you'd tell me!

@Anteaker

Sounds like a dead laser. You might start by cleaning the lasers lens with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and see if that does anything. If that doesn't show any signs of improvement you can proceed by adjusting the lasers pots. If that doesn't help you might need a new laser.

Also be sure that the install is correct and the problem isn't with a faulty install.
