Hi all, i hope this is in the correct section, this is my first post !!.

I have a Movie, the files total 7.5 gig, i know from my limited experience that to put it on a DUAL layer DVD i should have an .MDS file so the the burner knows where the "join" is !!!.

The movie plays perfectly from my Hard Drive into "Cyberlink Power DVD".

I tried DVD Shrink but this cant get Shrink it enough, so i am now stuck, any ideas anyone.

Can someone explain (or provide a link) what the a MDS file is use for?

DVD Decypter creates a MDS file when making an ISO image. I can burn the ISO images perfectly without the MDS file (or so I think). Under what cercumstance would I need the MDS file, or how might I want to use it?

Thanks

philraz:- thanks for your reply, i am a little muddled now, I have a new Double Layer blank disc (phew, what a price !) to burn this movie onto, but i understood that the Burner program needed a file with the .MDS extension so that it knew where the first layer finishes and the second layer starts.

For Burner programs i have DVD Decrypter and Nero 6.6.0.3 I am willing to try either of those if you think it should be OK.

I have, as i said before, pointed DVD Shrink at these files, but this program cant shrink them enough to fit on a standard 4.7gig disc.

does that help at all ?.

I'm not sure where i first heard about this MDS file extension stuff, but it could have been at "doom9" which is where i got the DVD Decrypter program from.

PS. i do have a Dual Layer capable DVD writer, LOL

@timmytoad
i dont know why DVD Shrink cannot shrink the movie enough,you must have the settings wrong,(i havent got it installed to take a look)
i use clonedvd2 for films,easy as pie

@nrnoble
the MDS file does the same job as a cue file does for a bin image,it stores the information needed for it to burn the iso correctly,and although you can burn without it,i can never understand why people dont use it..

dvd decrypter is one of a select few programs that allows users still running on the FAT32 set up ,(which doesnt allow a single file over 4gb),to burn an image over 4gb

it splits the file in 2,creating with an mds file
then when it comes to burning it,you select the mds file,thus gives the information to join them back up

hursty, I use Nero to burn and simply select the iso file. Never knew exactly what added value the .mds file provided so I never used it. Still a bit unclear what value it provides during the burn process vs not using it. I am sure it adds something, I just don't understand the specifics. thx.

@timmytoad

If you are burning to a blank DL disc, you don't need DVD Shrink at all because no compression is required for the disc image. Rerip the movie to your HDD using DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode, your MDS file should be generated at this point...change DVDD's mode to ISO write and select the MDS file for the burn.

@nrnoble

The MDS file is genrally reserved for DL burns, it contains the layer break information for burning...it is simply a set of instructions for burning.
