It all depends if your dvd burner has the bit-setting capability to booktype. Booktyping can only be performed with certain drives/using certain firmware/burn program/or a utility to turn the plus format into dvd-rom.Only the plus format can be booktyped. This include dvd+r/dvd+rw/and DVD+R DL.
These aren't actual dvd-roms,but it fools those stand alone players into thinking they are the dvd-rom format.

It also gives you a third format option to try in case you run into a dvd drive that doesn't recognize your backups.

A quality drive also helps out.

Plus format better quality?

I'd agree with that for all 3 of my benqs. Not so with my HP640c and I/O magic 16x writers. Those non benqs of mine definitely hate the plus format, because my players have a lot harder time recognizing their plus format backups.

Different models prefer certain formats. They can even favor certain manufacturers. Stand alone players: Same thing.

Media quality may also vary between a brand name like Fuji. You may run into Ty-G02 on their dash 8x,and get a another spindle that says Fujifilm-03. Huge quality difference between those 2 manufacturers. Same goes to most brand names.

If you aren't having issues with the dash, then stick with it.This includes burning and stand alone playability.

What's your burner's brand name and model #?

Pioneers definitely favor the dash format. They are not equipped for booktyping, but there is hacked firmware out there to achieve this. You'll have to use hacked fw/cross flash firmware and it may get hairy..This would be a last resort in case you ran into some stand alones that give you a no disc/dirty disc/wrong region/or similar error. I definetely wouldn't want to try it, LOL

I seem to find better manufacturers with the plus format. Maxell is a better brand in the plus format. I coded Maxell-002-00,which are hitachi, and Ritek-r03 in every +8x spindle I have used, and thats over 400 of them. Those maxell heitachi are sweet, and the Ritek-r03 are still very good.

Now take those same Maxell dash 8x. You'll have some hitachi- MXL-Rg03/Ritek-G05/and few cmags thrown in. The quality of the ritek-g05 seems to be getting worse. I'd definitely get the plus 8x maxells over the dash 8x maxells.

To find the higher quality media, look those labels over good. Look for the packs that says Made in Japan. This works with Sony/Fuji/and Maxell brand media.Lots of tys in the japanese sony and fuji. Hitachi with the japanese maxells. That's why taiyo yuden is the king. They don't outsource their media. But there are a lot of fake tys out there. Newegg.com has some of them.

I used to burn all of my DVD backups with DVD-R's. They would play at home on my Sony stand alone DVD player, but when I took them to work at the firehouse, they wouldn't play in the stand alone DVD player. I started using DVD+R's and booktyping them to DVD-ROM and now they play like a charm at work. That's the only way I burn now. Also, I found I had much less problems when I started using only quality media like Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden.

As for Better quality, I don't know about that. The quality of the final product should be the same on both a DVD-R and +R if you have a good burner. The advantage of the DVD+R is that it can be booktyped to DVD-ROM and is therefore compatible with more stand alone DVD players.

Graphics are not my cup of tea. Last year I had graphics issues. It really showed on my disco frog.He wouldn't move, but everyone else said he danced his ass off. So I Tried:
Changed the aperture through bios, like ddp told me
bought new 256k nvideo pci care
Motherboard-Same issue.

I had sprint.net dsl. It had an external modem which I got charged $100+ for. After I moved,I went to plain old dial-up. Now my graphics works perfect.

I've never messed with codecs and aspi layers. All 3 of my pcs burn and play dvds perfect.Nothing fancy or customized. My brother got a cd he burned with a bunch of codecs, still sitting here.

I use Nero to burn, which has its own aspi layer.Windvd on each pc- 4/5/6- to view them,DVD Shrink and AnyDVD for the ripping and compression.
