I tried to back up my Simpsons seasons 1 - 7 and only 1 or 2 discs fully work from each season. I successfully copy them using the updated version of DVDFAB Platinum. What do I have to do to copy the full dvd with all the menus and episodes intact. I searched for hours about this issue and only found a little information on it. I think it has to do with the way the people who make the copyright encryption on the dvds. I tried to backup other tv shows like Curb your enthusasium and the same thing happens to thoses too. I know nothing is wrong with my hardware. Please someone help me figure out how to backup my Simpsons dvd box set. my e-mail is i'manidiot.com edited by ddp

Sorry about posting my email. the dvd's i used are sony DVD-R high quality mcc kind.the software was DVDFAB Platinum and I don't understand what you mean about my computer specs. I copied 1000's of my dvds and I never had this problem with it exccept with the Tv shows on dvd. Is there a way I can phyically extract the files and then transfer them on to a dvd. Any information would help.

When you say don't fully work - what's happening? I've have the simpson's season 1-6 and don't remember anything special copy protections wise. I probably used DVD Shrink or Nero recode w/anydvd in the background.
If you want to rip them to your hard try DVD Decrypter you can then process the files thru shrink and burn also w/ decrypter.
Here's a guide for full disc w/ links to download the progs:

What I mean by it doesn't work right, is the copied dvd will start up ok with the menus ,extras and maybe 1 or 2 episodes will work but then it will just stop working on all dvd players. There is nothing wrong with the original dvds. I tried to backup all 7 seasons of the simpsons and 2 dvds out of each season will burn correctly and the other 2 dvds will not burn correctly. When I use Nero showtime player it brings up an error message which says it's "corrupt." I tried burning the "corrupt" dvds many times but it messes up every time. I'm sure this has happened to others that also have the simpsons dvds. Thanks for the info.

i just got the PM from ddp, there is something ambiguous about your statement here in regards to media
Quote:
the dvd's i used are sony DVD-R high quality mcc kind.
Sony DVD-R, whether made in taiwan OR japan, are NOT produced/manufactured by MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.), i need to know more specifics as to EXACTLY what kind of media you are currently using, 2ndly, i need to know exactly what make/model is your dvd burner to make sure your firmware is up to date on your drive...

lastly, i don't have experience with dvd fab platinum, so i couldn't help you there, i don't use that particular program personally...but, as binkie has stated, there really is NO special protection on those various box set tv show dvds...basically, if you KNOW what you are doing with the particular program you are using to rip/encode/burn, then it comes down to something else such as media used or burn speed or firmware issues with your drive..

need more info to help you further~ :)

you can thank ddp for bringing this to my attention...

I meant the DVD-R are tyg02 media, still the high quality kind. My dvd burners are a (source drive)plextor 716a and the drive I use to burn the dvd is a Sony dru-820a. I am pretty sure the drives are up to date with the firmware. I burn all my other dvds with no problem and when I tried to burn curb your enthusasium a while ago, and the simpson just recently they seem to be corrupt and like I said before, some dvds in the same season would work and some would not. The ones that would not work, I tried a couple of times and got the same results and nothing is wrong with the originals. I don't know all the ins and outs of burning and encoding but I know more than just the basics. If you could give me a link of where I could learn more information about the ripping and encoding that would be a big help. I will also try to use a couple different dvd copying programs on monday and let you guys know my results.
I leterally googled for hours about my problem and only found a little information with no solid solution.
Thank you ddp and doc ty for your concern and insight about my problem. And you to binkie7
Please bear with me for another day or two to see if your guys superior knowledge can help me find a solution.
Thanks
Mad

no worries, you are quite welcome, i will personally help you all that i can with your current issues on the boxset (tv epidsodal dvds), since you are using Taiyo Yuden media too (TYG02) and a quality burner, there is something with your encoding/ripping process that is giving you these headaches/issues~ :)

it's really too bad that i am not personally experienced with dvd fab platinum, i've heard and read it was a decent program, i just never had the chance to try it myself~ :)

give some other programs a try, i'm fairly experienced with slysoft's clonedvd2 as well as dvdshrink and a few others, i don't have many episodal dvds myself in my collection, so i will try to help with what i can in terms of those particular kinds of dvds...in terms of having all these "corrupt" files from the originals, the original discs themselves might "appear" perfect and pristine, however, that does NOT negate the fact that they COULD be "bad presses" from the production studios

i was helping a friend of mine on here on his boxset of Miami Vice and he was, much like you, able to backup only 2 out of the set of 4 (double sided), after a few exchanges from the store and multiple tries by both of us later, we basically came to the conclusion that particular "batches" of hollywood produced Miami Vice season discs were "bad presses"...he exchanged his boxset 3 times i believe locally before he got a set with ZERO "corruption" for all 4 discs~ :)

so, hopefully, this is NOT the case with your Simpsons and Curb your Enthusiasm boxsets, but the POSSIBILITY is indeed there to consider...

let us know if some of the other programs give you any "better" success with those discs, if they handle those episodals dvds better and you can make a good backup of it, then the issues boils down to being inherent in dvd fab platinum~ not the originals themselves...

here is a page with quite a few very well written guides to various programs you could try, bbmayo was one of MY mentors when i first joined AfterDawn, his guides STILL prove very helpful to MANY people to this day :)

docTY~

p.s. edit: i have not even seen the Sony dru-820a widespread locally yet and Sony's website doesn't even have a firmware update for that drive...if i may ask, since you are the ONLY person thus far that has that drive, i'm assuming you are using the firmware that came factory installed? most likely the 1st revision? if THAT is the case, good chance that the firmware is "not up to date" to handle the write strategies even onto Taiyo Yuden media...this is only a GUESS, as i don't know anyone who actually has that drive yet...would you happen to know what manufacturer it is a rebadged version of? if precedent is considered, as the last model, the Sony dru-810a is in fact a rebadged Benq dw-1640, and the model previous to that was the Sony dru-800a, which is a rebadged Liteon SOHW-1693S (which i own as well, the OEM Liteon 1693S, not the Sony version) i'm curious as to what the Sony dru-820a is???

this is just something to consider for such a NEW drive, Sony's firmware page doesn't even have ANY firmware updates for the dru-820a, it's not even listed as a matter of fact :) so, something you might want to try is, use your Sony dru-820a as the SOURCE drive to do the ripping (i'm pretty sure it will be slower than your Plextor), but, use the Plextor to do the actual BURNING portion of your backup (as the Plextor you have is currently up to date w/ firmware revisions), see if your problems are still there with the "corrupt files"/ playback issues...your Plextor's firmware is kept up to date, but your Sony drive is too new for an update to be even available (last i checked on Sony's website as well as rpc1.org)

I have a couple of days left to evaluate Clonedvd2. I already purchased Anydvd last year.

Having read over at cdfreaks that there were playback issues with Simpson's Season 4 and above using Clonedvd2, I did do Season 4 disc 1.

I took out all the extras, just did the 4 episodes on the disc with menus. Pared down to 3.93 GB from 7.91 GB. "Play all" with commentaries off, played PERFECTLY!

Thanks mackdl for the info but I want to get all of the extras and episodes and just transfer it to 1 full dvd. I might got it right this time. I used DVD Decrypter to extract all the files from the disc to my hard drive(I am using season 1 disc 2 because I had problems trying to just transfer it from disc to disc) then from my hard drive I am using dvdfab to transfer it to a dvd. I will let you know my results in a half of an hour.

That disc is 7.55gb. Most members here would advise against doing the entire disc, unless it was on a DL.

I did do backups of the Simpsons using DvdXCopy, entire disc, didn't turn out too badly. Most likely because they are cartoons, and they were also being viewed on a 29" TV.

Because the original dvd is so big, that could be the reason why it doesn't work correctly. I remember copying dvds that big on a non DL dvd and thoses working fine. Why do you think it would work sometimes and not other times? Thanks mackdl for giving me something to think about because that never crossed my mind.

You don't know how happy I am right now... I successfully burned the simpsons dvd which is a large amount of content around 7 1/2 gbs on one dvd. all the extras, languages and everything.
Thanks to ddp, binkie7, mackdl and esspecially docty who gave me the "how to guides on extracting/ripping/encoding/burning my dvds".
I spent hours and days trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I still don't know what I was doing wrong but like mackdl showed me that there is probably an extremely large amount of content which could posibily have been the problem. What I did was use dvd decryptor to extract the files to my hard drive then I just simply used dvdfab to transfer the files on to a dvd and it works just like my original. Could anybody explain to me why it would work like that but not dvd to dvd?
Thanks again to everybody that helped me.

@Ireland,

This click on the fox and rip to HD is a new thing. Perhaps someone could make a simple guide for "dummies" like me? Does it go to a temp file, how do you erase off HD when finished? I have "Enemy of the State" which has crc errors, I did with Xrescue, but I HATE that nag screen.

this is the reason i posted the right click on the fox to you.

New: Added "AnyDVD Ripper". This little tool repairs defective DVDs
while copying them to your harddisk. It can be started from the menu of
the AnyDVD fox icon. It can be started as a stand alone application from
the start menu as well, so it can be used even if AnyDVD is not registered
and the trial period has expired.
It is identical to FixVTS (http://www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS/) but instead
of fixing problems "in place" it copies the files to your harddisk directly
from the source DVD. It fixes the problems while the files are copied.
Some DVDs which have severe mastering defects e.g.,

make a folder and direct the copy files to that folder on c-drive..
to remove the movie files off ye hd,right click to delete

was just doing some research on that Sony dru-820a that you currently have and found a NEW firmware that was released TODAY 3/6/06 :) when i posted yesterday, it wasn't available yet, but lo and behold, speak of the devil, it came out today...

1.0b available here:

http://sony.storagesupport.com/legalagreement.zulu?dlid=dvdrw/dow...

i also found out that the Sony dru-820a is a rebadge BenQ DW1670 with DVD-RAM support :P i'm personally waiting on the dw1650, as i don't care for the dvd-ram support as benq's last incarnation of a dvd-ram capable drive was the piece of crap DQ60, sorry...that was a teac made drive and it was very poor, not a "true" Benq~ :)

just thought i'd give you the first heads up on a newly updated firmware for your Sony dru-820a...happy flashing, i would suggest to do so when you have time, write strategies have been updated to recognize/burn newer media~ :)
