Around here it will be fairly universal to stay away from CMC and TTG02(TDK).

erm, no!, have a look at this epic thread for reasons to stay away from CMC discs...

...edit- and TDK are described i mean scorned and abused (rightfully so) in that same thread...

edit- also look thru this other epic thread re CMC (ugh!) - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/262544

to re-emphasize the point, NO~!

as biased as i am towards CMC MAG, i would still take them over the TTG02s (tdk's own manufactured media) LOL :)

i wouldn't get those discs in your link only because you are choosing the lesser of 2 evils, whether you get "lucky" or not with either of those media ID codes, you still LOSE in the long term~ :)

docTY~

p.s. i'm glad that you've had success with the TTG02 ian2k5, but for ME personally, i would rather use the attrocious CMC MAGs over them ANY DAY OF THE WEEK~

I actually like them, but killer kitty hates them. So, the one who has the AK47, in any argument where the other is unarmed, wins.. Therfore no CMCs survive in my house, not for long anyways. I have to keep the one rare 4 year old surviving CMC locked up in a safe. :)

Die CMC Mag!!!

CMC Mag dye is great if you enjoy the following:
1. Wasting Money
2. Watching Your Movies Skip and Freeze
3. Watching Your Discs Deterioriate in 6-12 months
4. Backing up all your CMC Mag backups on Quality Media

Down the pike you will save yourself the headaches and aggravation that goes along with bad media if you purchase quality media NOW. Just look at the people here that had to re-backup hundreds of discs because they were on bad media!

As with any application there are serious problems caused by using inferrior quality media on the PS2. To avoid this hassle I suggest picking up media from the following manufacturers: 1. Ritek 2. Taiyo Yuden. 3. Mitsubishi Chemicals. While many don't recognize these manufacturers they are quite well known by thier name brand re-labeled counterparts. These dyes can be found on the following name brands: 1. Verbatim 2. Fujifilm 3. TDK. They can also be found on other lines of discs but they aren't quite as common as the 3 listed above. Name brand media outsources to these manufacturers to produce media for them. Therefore by purchasing one of these name brand labels, you are just paying for the label and you never know for sure what dye you are getting. Name brand discs are famous for changing out manufacturers from time to time so you could end up getting a crappy quality dye which will affect the playback of the disc. Now to give a detailed breakdown of the dyes listed above:

1. Ritek-if you spend any time on forums on the I-net you will see this Manufacturer recommended quite a bit. They are without a question the best overall media for the money. This is not to say that they are infalible, it is simply to say that no other media within it's pricerange (and even some media that is almost twice as much) will deliver the kind of results that Ritek will. With that said, you do have to be aware of B-Grade quality labels that claim to carry the Ritek dye (ie Datawrite, Arita) as they will not be quite as good as the official Ritek labels (ie Ritek, Ridata, Traxdata).

2. Taiyo Yuden-without a doubt this media is absolute top notch. Taiyo Yuden is definitely higher quality than Ritek. IMHO if Taiyo Yuden won't play on your machine than NOTHING will play on your machine. However, it should be noted that Taiyo Yuden will cost you almost twice as much as Ritek will. If you have a very picky PS2 then this is most definitely the media for you.

3. Mitsubishi Chemicals-This is right behind Taiyo Yuden (and above Ritek) for quality. However, the major drawback is that it is pretty rare to find an actual Mitsubishi Chemicals label. This manufacturer is commonly found on Verbatim DVD-R. So the problem comes in two parts. 1. Unless there is a good sale going on ATM on Verbatim, you could easily end up spending more than if you just bought Taiyo Yuden. 2. Verbatim like other brand name labels can/has changed out who manufactures the dyes for their discs. I remember what fun some people had a year ago when Verbatim suddenly switched to the CMC Mag dye on some of their lines of discs. CMC Mag is generally what you find on Memorex and Khypermedia DVD-R. I definitely recommend the Mitsubishi Chemicals dye but I feel that there are better options for your money (the two listed above).

With that said there are a number of other dye manufacturers out there (ie CMC Mag, Princo, Optodisc, ect.) and a number of people use these discs without a hitch but the 3 I have listed above definitely stand out from the rest in terms of quality and compatibility. Remember that there is no such thing as 100% compatibility on any recordable media, but the 3 listed above seem to come pretty close. Also even though some may be able to get cheaper quality media to work, they tend to replace their lasers more often, and experience slower loading/boot-up times.

Is it just me, or are you with me too, Doc., I wonder why cdfreaks rated the famous Taiyo Yuden as being #2 and Ritek as #1?

Honestly, I personally think both Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim (MCC) is way better than Ritek. From my personal experiences, I would have to say that Taiyo Yuden is #1 in my book.

However, that's just my humble opinion only.

This has been the 'worst' Maxell Ritek R03 disc over the last 30

burns on both my Benq 1640 & Benq 1650 burners.

and one done today, better PIF

98 is the usual quality score, with a healthy lot of 99's thrown in. (nero scan)

The Benq's Nero scan's, due to the way they interpret Max PIF, (a PIF of 4 is equiv to a PIF of 1 on a number of other drives, Sony(liteon) etc, although the overall quality rating remains consistent) can look quite alarming at times with a decent disc.

Maxell DVD+R X8 booktyped (DVD-ROM) RitekR03- has played in everything so far (ps2 v4 incl{fifa street2}).

Up till now Verbatim DVD-R X8 (TYG02) Taiyo Yuden dye had the best burn results for me, coming in around 96% on average.

Be interesting to keep a check on media stability with these two different disc's.

Taiyo Yuden (leaving X16 media out of it) produce 'IME', a more 'consistent' variety of disc's than what Ritek do nowadays, and that takes the guesswork out of it for people who want consistent performance, tho at a price.

There's no doubt 'IME' when Ritek get it right their quality is bang up there with the best, but as the Ritek G05 printables showed, they do produce disc's which are far from acceptable.

As for CMC disc's, I tend to shy away from disc's that many folk have reported problems with.

A quick glance on these forums, and you'll find many posters unhappy with the quality of said disc'c.
