im new here and new to the dvd-r scene. anyway i recently downloaded dvd decrypter and dvd shrink. i know that copying dvd's is illegal. and correct me if im wrong i think those two programs are illegal as well. anyway my question : is it possible for the fbi or anyone else to track me down since i downloaded these programs and start investigating me? also are there any know dvds out there that can actually send info that it is being decrypted? (haha, i know thats kind of a far out one) im just a bit paranoid since the punishment is pretty stiff. may be a dumb question but just wanted to know. thanks in advance.

this is a very grey & confusing area

(U.S law as i understand it)-
copying dvd's is illegal1! backing up original dvd's that you own is not (you are allowed one back up disc of the originals that you own)

it is illegal for someone to make software that allows people to remove the copy protection (so how people are supposed to make back ups doesn't make sense???)

there are several programs out there which remove copy protection not just decrypter & shrink.

anything you download is trackable, there are probably several million people who have downloaded these programs & i guess it would be a waste of time & resorces to track every single person who downloads these programs. i have never known of anyone get into trouble for downloading such programs.

i think you will be fine & have nothing to worry about.

my opinion is that they are more interested in catching the people who are selling illegally copied disc.

LIKE I SAID THIS IS MY UNDERSTANDING & OPINONS ABOUT THIS IF I AM WRONG ABOUT ANY OF THIS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME.

It is not illegal to dl a program, it is what you do with that program afterwards that is suspect. DVD Shrink can be used for other purposes besides backing up movies. My daughter uses this sw when doing her Powerpoint presentations to Shrink the video down for DVD. Decrypter can also be used to rip video is unprotected, so there are legitimate uses for these programs.

What I don't get is that you can go to ebay and buy ripped copies of bootleg concert dvd's etc. I am sure that some of them are copywrited. If the feds wanted to start somewhere they could probably start there.

hi,
Anything you do on a computer can be brought up if the fbi wanted to, but the question is why would they want to do that?

It seems that in the U.S. it's illegeal to own or sell any copy circumventing tools but its ok to backup 1 copy of copy protected movie- how the hell are you supoose to do that?

I say as long as your are backing up your own dics even with cicumvetning tools, don't worry.

peafce,
j
