.wmv, .avi and .mpg playback problems

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums but this site looks like a great source of information. Now onto my problem.
*Background info that leads up to my problem*
So I decided to update the driver on my video card today because I wasn't happy with the frames per second I was getting on my online games. So I changed my vid card driver and wasn't happy with the performance at all so I reinstalled my old driver and everything was great. Until I decided to view a couple of car racing videos I had downloaded off the net.
When I tried to open the .wmv and .mpg videos (Media player classic was my default viewer) all I would get is sound and no video. So I tried to open the same videos with WM Player 10, no dice. Then I tried Nero's Showtime player, still no dice. I thought that somehow the vid card driver installation had screwed up my K-lite Codec pack, so I uninstalled K-lite and reinstalled. Still no dice. I even tried reinstalling my vid card driver a second time with still no success.
I'm totally at a loss as to what is wrong and furthermore, what I need to do to rectify the problem. Can anyone please help me? Many thanks in advance!

what version of windows are you running?
If its xp can you use a restore point basck to a period where you were happy with it

Sorry, I should have listed that I am infact using XP sp2, however system restore is out of the question since I always keep it turned off. I guess this is one of those times where I should have kept it turned on.
Any other help or ideas?? Thanks.

have you done the clean install, taken it back to absolute zero and started again

Could you please detail what a clean install entails? I thought I had done a clean install but perhaps i'm not doing it correctly. Could you please detail the steps on how a clean vid card driver installation should go? Thanks.

i dont mean just the video card ,drivers etc i mean reformat the whole pc.
Put your windows disc in the drive and boot from the cd and then follow all the prompts and wipe your whole system, but make sure you back up all your data

No, I haven't done that yet because it is sort of a last resort option for me. I will if i have to, but obviously I don't want to go to the trouble of burning 80 gigs worth of data to DVD just because Windows XP can't do a simple driver install without having some kind of an issue. :(

technically you should of being able to just remove the card by going to
my computer: right click
go to manage
click on device manager
locate your graphics card under display adapters, and then update or uninstall etc.
when you restart your pc it will re detect it if you have uninstalled it and then attempt to put the driver you want in then

Yes and that is the way I had tried doing it several times and every time I restart the PC after removing the vid card driver all my videos work fine. Then I install a vid card driver(doesn't matter which driver, I've tried Forceware 76.44, 81.26 and 83.xx and they all give my videos sound but no video) and the videos go all to hell. I'm at my witt's end with this.

I just ran to the same problem, sound but no video. This was the only thread I was able to dig up with the search. The players (MPC, WMP, AviPreview, VLC) even resize themselves to the correct size, but the image is blanc. I've tried system restore, uninstalling all codecs, temporarily removing all Windows/System32 entries displayed by Gspot, removing (with drivercleaner) and installing video drivers, trying different codec packs, even using VLC player that is supposed to use it's own drivers instead of the ones installed in windows.
I ran to this problem after trying a few video editors (AviSynth, StaxRip, VirtualDub, DVX, SUPER, and AviDemux). They were supposed to be okay, all of them recommended by this forum or free-codecs.com. Needless to say, I did uninstall all video-related programs, even the ones that worked perfectly before this mishap.
I am not going to reinstall windows because of this, too much time and effort put in keeping the windows working. And other than this, it works marvellously.

Giga-byte K8NS-Ultra
Radeon 9600Pro 128Mb
Omegadrivers.net
Edit: GSpot shows everything normally, but the problem exists with every single videofile, all of which worked flawlessy before.

Okay, the above problem solved. This is extremely embarassing considering that I do know quite a bit about these things.
I had tested my video card with both analog and digital cables. I left the analog mode on in my monitor, so my video card sends the video signal only to the primary screen, which is the digital one.
I am so embarrassed. Oh my god.

Tuevo, can you please tell me in detail how you switched from an analog to a digital display? This may be the same problem I have as I have my video card hooked up to both my computer monitor and my HDTV at the same time and I may be experiencing the same problem you have a solution to. Thanks.

The switching itself happens from my TFT, and my video card is sending the both outputs at the same time. To change the primary monitor in ATI Control Panel:
Right-click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Displays.
If two displays are in use, one of them has the bullseye icon selected, the other has a two-monitor icon. Clicking the icons changes which is the primary monitor.
If "Extend my window to this monitor" is enabled for monitor #2 in
Right-click desktop > Properties > Settings,
The above method does not help since there is no bullseye icon in the Displays menu. However, in that situation there shouldn't be this problem.

Thanks T. I have an Nvidia 6200 but I'll see if I can find a way to do what you recommend with the Nvidia control panel.
