I keep trying to encode this movie and make an ISO image with it on my HD. But instead the result is a WinRAR archive foler with VideoTS and AudioTS folders with all the same VOB files in the video folder that I started with! I want to take the VOB's that are on my comp and turn them into an ISO...I've done it before but I just reformated my comp and I may not have the program on here that I need or something...

You can use DVDshrink to create an ISO image from the VIDEO_TS folder then have it auto burn the image to disk using DVD decrypter or nero (nero6 version 6.6.0.18 or nero7 version 7.0.5.4). Import the files using the "open files" tab in shrink and browse to the VIDEO_TS folder, highlight it and choose open/ok.

To autoburn with decrypter:
Run shrink, when backing up, choose to save target as an "ISO image file and burn with DVD decrypter".

If you want shrink to just create an ISO image stored on your HDD, when backing up using shrink, just choose to save target as an "ISO image file" from the dropdown menu then choose a location to store it to.

OR
With nero:
Choose to burn with nero from the dropdown menu when backing up, make sure you also have burn with nero checked in the last tab of shrink's preferences.

Man I'm not stupid. I have been using Shrink for ages. Did you not read my whole post? I have gotten it to do it before but I just reformated my computer and instead of outputting the ISO image it outputs a WinRAR folder with an ISO extension but when I open it it is just VOB files...as for that other program the exact same thing happened...it says "filename.iso" but it appears as a WinRAR file...not an ISO. Is there a codec or something I need?!

It sounds like you've somehow made an file association with WinRAR and it's taking over the ISO files.

Now this is just a suggestion, only that. You may have already tried something like this. But I just thought I might mention it as something to try. Whether it helps you or not, I have no way of knowing...

Change the program that is associated with the ISO file type.

Open Control Panel and open Performance and Maintenance.
On mine, located upper left is the "See Also" links. Click on "file types".
Click the File types tab.

Once the list loads, scroll down to ISO. Click on it.
In the Details for 'ISO" extension, yours probably says "Opens with WinRAR archiver".

Click the Change button. This opens a list of programs you can use to open the ISO with. In my system I have it set to open with Nero Burning ROM. I don't know what programs you have but anything other than the WinRAR program would probably be an improvement!

This is simply a guess so take it for what it's worth. You may have tried this already, I don't know.

Cheers,
Frank

Well I haven't tried that yet...but I don't even have a button that says "performance and maintenence"

also I got Nero to burn the WinRAR ISO file but it isn't dvd player compatible. So right now Shrink is encoding the disk I burned and I'm hoping I can burn it normal...

No one is calling you stupid, your initial description of the problem was alittle unclear, so one has to make asumptions and hope they're right while trying to cover all the bases.

The reason your ISO files look like WinRAR files is because you used(or may of used winrar) to extract the files with, or simply just have WinRAR installed on your system; those files will by default be associated with WinRAR. You should still be able to use the files as you normally would have as long as they have a .iso extension. If you wish to remove the file association with WinRAR then:

Run WinRAR
goto: options-->settings-->click on the intergration tab
in the "Associate WinRAR with" section, uncheck the ISO selection

The WinRAR file association should now be no more.

Live Long and Prosper.

If the file is really an iso, you can right click it, go to open with and choose the program you want to handle isos. At the bottom of that window, there's a checkbox that says always use this program for this kind of file.

I have XP's Control Panel in the "Category" view, I guess yours is in the "Classic" view. You would just open Control Panel and click on Folder Options.

I think other posts have covered this better though, ie john123 and ashroy01.

Good luck,
Frank

Well I figured out how to change it but what do I change it to? What program should I link it with? Before the symbol was a page with a disk on it I believe.

I would associate the ISO image with Imgburn or DVD Decrypter.

Edit: I guess mine are associated with Nero Burning Rom, as that is the icon tied to the image.

Mine normally opens with Nero Burning ROM too.
I wanted to see what would happen if I went on line and selected a program other than Nero. I downloaded IsoBuster:

http://www.isobuster.com/

After that I created a short ISO image with Shrink. Clicking the ISO icon opened it in IsoBuster. It showed up as an ISO containing an AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS folder which makes sense... That's the file structure that is contained within the ISO image. Seeing it shown as such is not a surprise. (This is what you saw when you opened it with the WinRAR program, I guess.)

I closed IsoBuster and then opened ImgBurn and used it to find and load in the ISO, no problems.

The point is, that regardless of what file extension is associated with the ISO, you are still going to have to open it with a burning program like ImgBurn, Decrypter or Nero.
As long as the ISO is made correctly in the first place, it won't matter if the associated program can open it correctly because you are not going to use that program....At least I wouldn't.

I changed the file association again, this time to ImgBurn. Now when I click on the ISO, I get a Win32 error message. However I can still open the ISO in ImgBurn if I open the ImgBurn program first and then browse for the ISO.

At any rate, the IsoBuster program seems like a reasonable choice. I've used it before and I'll keep it as the opener for ISOs.

ImgBurn is a great tool for burning ISOs too. It is the advanced version of Decrypter's burn engine and works well.
