dual layer dvd burner trouble

i bought a msi neo3-v mainboard and im having trouble with my dvd burner now. it will read a dvd, copy it, burn a cdrom read a cd rom. the only thing it wont do is read a dvdrom or burn a dvd. anyone able to help?

its a dual layer lg dvd burner and itll read most dvds but not all

your firmware may need to be up dated go to Firmwarepage.com you will need the model number of the drive and see if there is a new upgrade for your drive

Sounds like it also could be a configuration problem, is the burner being recognized as a DVD burner or just a CD burner? You may have to change some settings.

yes it finds it as a dvd burner, i got 1 update for it and itll read a dvd now but it wont burn a dvd or read a dvd rom

It would be easier to help if we knew what drive it is exactly, a little more about your computer and what programs you're tryin to use. Don't buy a new drive til you figure what's going on with that one.

thats my computer info, the dvd burners a lg dual layer and im trying to use DVD Shrink and Nero, but it wont read a dvdrom either. it reads a dvd and a cd/rom but thats it

As LG probably has more than one model of Dual Layer burner, can you check the properties of the drive and get the full model name. For instance, my drive is a "Phillips DVD/RW DVD8701". Knowing exactly which drive you have will help in determining the problem.

For some reason, I'm having a hard time researching your drive. I couldn't even find any info on LG's website ! In order to help solve this, I have two questions for you:
1. If you put a DVD in the drive, are you able to open it up in windows and see the contents of it (files) ?
2. Which version of Nero are you using?
The answer to those questions will determine the following: If you can't even see the files, the problem could either be that there is some compatibility issue between an element of your computer (either hardware or software) or it could also mean that the drive itself could be defective.
The other thing is that if your problem occurs while trying to burn with Nero, know that older versions of Nero simply don't support some drives, especially newer ones.
Let us know.

Have you tried reinstalling the drive with the Add Hardware wizard in the Control Panel or troubleshooting the drive in Device Manager? The board change shouldn't be the problem. I did a build and used the old HD with an OS already installed. I had a problem installing a new HD for storage and had to go through an install process. What I'm pointing out is that drives can sometimes have problems working properly due to interface issues. If it checks out in Device Manager, you may want to look to your software.

yes ive tried the trouble shooter many times, tried reinstalling the drive but i will check out that link for something.

im using Nero 7 and no the dvd burner wont read a dvdrom cd but it will read a normal cd rom. also another problem that just started was the drive would disappear when i load up a dvdrom or it will change to a cd drive within windows.

You may end up having to reinstall the OS or replace the drive, but I'd try a clean install of Nero first. Use the Nero Clean Tools from the Nero site and when installing, use the latest version of Nero 7. Leave out the InCD if you've had it installed. If Shrink and other apps aren't reading the drive properly, I'd suspect the OS or maybe even the drive Since the BIOS is showing the drive, it's up to the OS and software to work with the drive. So, it appears the troubleshooting should be directed that way. If you have another known good drive you can use as a check, that would eliminate the drive itself being a problem.

i tried putting my cd burner in and it works fine. i put the dvd burner into my other computer and it works perfect. i also called LG and they said that it may not be compatiable or the drives burnt out, i think im just gonna keep it in my other computer and buy a new drive for this one and see what happens.

Good idea, that other PC needed a DVD burner anyway. With the low cost of a lot of drives now, I buy burners instead of ROM drives. I've got 2 PCs with twin burners now. That's still strange business about the drive working in one PC and another drive working okay in the one with the problem. Hopefully the new DVD burner works as well.

That happed to me once. The old drive in this case a CD burner worked in the old computer but not in the new one. Maybe the bus speed of the drive was too slow below what the motherboard would tollerate. I took the message. Try a lite-on. They are both dirt cheap and a superior drive. I have seen the dual layer for as little as $30. You will not miss the old drive.

As you said Brobear, it is odd that the burner works in one of the computers. Probably just not compatible with something on the first computer then...

I'm having a related problem. I'm trying to write to a DVD+R Dual Layer disc but for some reason the drive is reading it as a CD.
I'm also using an LG dvdram gsa-4167b with the latest firmware. Trying to write with Nero 6.3. The problem starts before Nero even gets it though, since windows explorer identifies the disc as a CD.
The disc is a fujifilm.

My DVDram is supposed to support this exact type of DVD+R DL.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you are using the XP OS. Try uninstalling the drive in the Device Manager and reboot and let the system pick it back up. Instead of uninstalling the drive itself, uninstall the IDE channel it is on. Normally the secondary IDE is the one with optical drives.
You need to update your Nero to the 6.6.0.18 version. That's not the latest Nero version, but the most stable they'v had recently. There should be a link posted for it somewhere around AD.

with my new LG GSA-4167B, I can't even read a dual layer DVD, Windows (XP professional) gets it as an empty CD. I will be grateful to everyone who can suggest any idea.
PS: I've just reinstalled windows...
