I have not done this movie.

You say that you are having problems getting it to shrink. Can I assume that you are able to rip it to the HD?

Are you backing up the complete movie, or reauthoring it?

Have you made sure that you have set the target size to the appropriate size?

Can you post the exact error message that you are getting in each of the respective programs that you have tried?

Let us know.

@ sesko

There is your problem. When you use DVDfab Decrypter (version 2.9.6.8 or later), AnyDVD MUST be turned off. If you also have DVD43 running in the background, that MUST be turned off as well. Then use Shrink. Good luck.

sesko, I am not talking about burning. And not to insult your intellegience (it's Maxell not Maxwell. Maxwell is a coffe brand), but when you rip with DVDfab Decrypter with AnyDVD running in the background, the files (movies with the new encryption) that are created are corrupted and that's where you start to run into problems with Shrink. Shrink will give you an error message just like what you have experienced. I've backed up many recent Disney and Sony movies and so far have been sucessful 100% of the time. Alkohol has a great write up for backing up The Fog and Howls Moving Castle can't be any different. Suggest you read that write up as it works 100% of the time.

This is how I backup my DVDs.

1) rip with DVDfab Decrypter (AnyDVD and DVD43 MUST be turned off)
2) shrink using DVDShrink
3) and burn with DVD Decrypter (from DVDShrink choose ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter)

Alkohol suggests processing with VOBblanker prior to Shrink, but I haven't found any reason to so far.

If you are still running into error messages, try uninstalling DVDfab Decrypter via the Control Panel's remove program and then reinstall it. Must be version 2.9.6.8 or later. I heard on this forum that you must do this in order for the latest changes in DVDfab to take effect over the previous versions.

Good luck. Hey I'm junior member now! Thanks sesko!

Hey man, this is how I rip disney movies and it works every time. First open up DVD Decrypter. Go to the mode option at the top and select iso. After you rip it as an iso open DVD Shrink. Choose file then open disc image. Select you movie and viola!

Hi guys,

Thanks for "all" the good advice here. I've used all the suggestions made and I can get the .vob files copied to my HD with Decrypter, Shrink didn't want to work because of the vts 7 files as well. Used vob blanker and blanked 2 & 3 of vts 7.

Now Shrink will work but All I have is the "storyboard" version of the movie? I can't find the actual movie vobs anywhere.

The main movie file looks to be Title 8 (1:59:04, 4090mb) But this intire file is storyboarded, not the normal movie.

Was wondering if anyone else had this happen. Maybe I'm just missing something.

Any clues or ideas would be greatly appreciated :)

Regards,

MC

I don't know how much you know about shrink, so my description will assume you're somewhat new.

You may of just chosen the wrong title to backup. If you still have the video files on your HDD produced by vobblanker, run shrink and open the video files. Click on the re-author tab and double click on the upper most title on the right side of the window (this should represent the main movie), now click on the compression tab and uncheck all the boxes except the 5.1 AC3 english audio channel. Click on the backup tab and proceed as normal at this point.

Thanks for the reply. I have used Shrink for quite a while now, I have the normal "Menue" files first, then the "Main Movie" which is shone as "Title 8" this is the 4gig file and the only file that comes close to being large enough for the actual movie. After that I have the normal "extras" files...all of which are very small. The largest being 7mb, the rest are 0.37mb (which is basically empty)

I've never had this problem before and I've backed up 100's of dvds over the last few years.

I'm not sure if the problem is that I'm somehow not ripping "all" of the original disc files (with decrypter) or if I have the entire disc and the animated movie file is just being hidden somehow.

lol souds crazy I know...but the only movie file I have after ripping is a storyboard version (which has audio btw, sounds like the normal soundtrack with music and effects, voices ect)

I'll keep messing with it. Not sure how much I can really do though. There are no more files.

My gut feeling is that for some reason I'm not ripping the entire dvd.

I've tried decrypter, dvdfabdecrypter.

I'd try Anydvd but I already used up the trial period months ago.

Any other "free" ripping programs that I could try?

Again Thank you for the help and ideas!

Regards,

MC :)

I haven't tried this movie yet, so I'm not sure why you're having this problem.

Make sure you don't have any DVD encryption cracking software running in the backround like DVD43.

Try this (sorry if you've already done this):

Get the latest version of DVDFab decrypter, and if you still have the DVD, use DVDFab to rip the video files to your HDD (it's a whole movie ripper, so you'll get everything). Process the files thru vobblanker (blank out cells 02 and 03 of VTS_07_*VOB), open the new files produced by vobblanker with shrink and reauthor as instructed and see what happens (you could have shrink create an ISO image file and use DVD decrypter to burn to disk).

DVDFab:

VobBlanker:
http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

EDIT: You can use vobblanker to view each cell of a particular VTS, so you can use it to preview the cells of the VTS that represents the main movie to make sure you're getting what you want and that it looks ok.

@ MrCairo

Dude, this movie is a 2 disc set. You must have the 2nd disc.

BTW, I backed up the movie (no extras/menus) using only DVDfab Decrypter 2.9.6.8, DVD Shrink, and burned ISO with DVD Decrypter. And WITHOUT AnyDVD nor DVD43 running in the background. No need for VOBblanker at all.

Good luck.

OMG /hangs head in shame :(

Guys I am "so" sorry to of wasted your time with this issue! I indeed realized late last night that there were 2 disc's. I just assumed my wife had placed the dvd back into the case and simply opened it up and used it for the backup. (the original disc 1 was still in the dvd player lol)

I've always considered myself as a "fairly" bright individual...no more lol

Those days are behind me now I guess /sigh

I was even sober...which just adds insult to injury :)

But Thank you one and all for your replys and efforts to help me, I was able to correct disc 1's vts 07 problem with VOB blanker so all is well.

Again I am very sorry for the mistake.

Very best Regards 2 All :)

Hey thanks, I just had the same problem with "howls" and vobbanker worked great! It also helped me on Gargoyles season 2 disc1, which is another disney disc I wasn't able to back up before vob. So thanks again.

To: creaky
You were able to back up howls moving castle just by using shrink alone? Could you explain? And also what type of reader/burner do you have? Cause I've got pretty good equipment on my pc so if I was having a problem with howls before vobbanker even when I tried shrink 3.2.0.15 first, then my only thought would be that it?s a difference in reader/burners...

@oneguy - i'm pretty sure i used just Shrink. if i didn't i would have used DVDFAb Decrypter (free version) first, to get the entire DVD to hard disc, then use DVD Shrink from there. if that doesn't work for you use vobblanker in between the 2 programs...

Well I just decrypted it to the hard drive with dvddecrypter then opened it up with vobbanker and then vobbanker sent the new files back to another spot on my hard drive and then I used shrink on it twice, cause that d@mn thing was big and I didn't want to risk it not fitting on a 4.7 and then I was done. It was long and boring but I haven't trusted dvdfab ever since I tried getting this foreign region 2 PAL film "la hain" backed up and the backed up version that dvdfab had done didn't have the menu or main menu options working. Well okay, I was just dumfounded when I read that shrink was all you used but I guess nevermind. An G'night.

Ripping Method: DVDFab

When I preview this movie using the preview and cut in vobBlanker v 2.1.0.0, the beginning of the movie is interlaced and shows me the same studio Ghibli logo three times and some of the cells within the movie are repeated as they are interlaced also. Is there any way to get rid of this?

Just an addendum, I don't want any of the extras I just want the main movie and nothing else. Is there a way that I can do this using tdog's method so that the video will have a much higher video quality. Any help on this matter will be really apprecieated. Thanks
