Using DVD Decryptor to make a backup it always creates an MDS file. I found the setting to uncheck the create an MDS file and I was wondering if it was actually needed in the process. What is the purpose of the MDS file anyway?

cwallace,
A .MDS file is a file that contains information about the ISO file. If you are going to do a d/l burner then inside the .mds file is the info about the layer break. It is similiar to the .ifo file. I always keep the .mds file

I just noticed that when I make a back up with shrink it doesn't create one. It is just bothersome to have a duplicate filename in the directory that is a different format. It isn't that big of a deal I was just wondering if it is ok to uncheck the create MDS file button and if it would burn ok without one...:)

Thanks...
Chris

cwallace,
If you are only going to do DVD-5 then I would not worry about it. If you are doing DVD-9 then you will need the .mds file DVDD creates. Shrink and Nero both have problems w/ the correct layer break but DVDD or Imgburn never do if the .mds file is present. If the .mds file is not present then all of the above programs try a best guess as to where it should be and DVDD and Imgburn come closer to where it should( original layer break) be than Shrink and Nero do.

Ok...I am seeing more clearly what you mean. I think I will just keep them there and once I get the main list created I will be adding the names manually to the spreadsheet so it won't matter on large editing of file lists. I only have around 125 movies in the list right now so it will be a one time finish and out...I have just always used a DOS command to create the text file with the directory list...the MDS just created a dup filename in the list...:)

Thanks VERY much for the insight...

Chris
