1. Not for some time. First, tape is still a very convenient method to store video. Secondly, high quality video still takes a lot of GB's. For example, miniDV using DV compression is still around 13GB per hour.
2. Also, not for some time. There is a very large archive of 4:3 movies and it will take at least 10 or more years before all 4:3 TV sets have dissappeared from all living rooms in the world (if they do at all).

i have also heard that widescreen (16:9) will be the format out there in 3 years....is this correct?

im asking about this widescreen thing because i own a 4:3 HDTV and am wondering when most of the video formats will be in widescreen..thus making my new 4:3 hdtv obsolete

Well most movies are Shot in Widescreen allready and have allways been... and if you have a 4:3 TV your TV set automaticly converts 16:9 Video to Display on a 4:3 TV set so even if all HD Transmitions were widescreen you could still use your 4:3 HDTV set....

I don"t think HD will the the Main Standard For a while as it will still take a while for HDTV"s to come down in Price so that the average Joe can afford them....They would still have to Drop the Price by 80% before I could afford one so it will probably 10 to 15 years before I will get one.....

Cheers

This is kinda off the topic but i just went and bought an hd antenna so i can recive some digital transmisions (i say some because i live near alot of trees). But sometimes the picture has bars on the sides, instead of on the top and bottom like widescreen. And then other times the picture is compleatly boxed in (bars on all sides). Is there anything i can do about this?

No ,I don"t think you can....It is Doing that because that is the Only way to Fit the Video on the Screen...HD Transmitions come in Many Different Resolutions and Aspect ratios so sometimes your TV has to add these Borders to Fit the Video on the Screen properly, without them the Picture would have to be Resizes to Full screen which would Stretch or Squish and Basicly Distort the Image....
