Can't seem to find any made in Japan discs anywhere. i looked at Verbatem, Maxellm, Sony and Fuji from 3 different stores and all were made in Taiwan. Will these made in Taiwan discs be OK?? I'm still kinda an noob! I'm Toronto, Canada.

being in Canada, the Taiyo Yuden made Verbatim branded discs are not available to you either, this is only in the UK where they are found~ :)

so, to answer your question, from choices of "best to worst" in MY opinion when only dealing with "made in taiwan" spindle selection...here it goes:

1. Verbatim
2. Sony
3. Maxell
4. Fuji

that's just MY opinion of what I would personally buy if only the MIT were available...

the Verbs will be MCC coded, the Sony's will have their own Sony code, Maxells will be Ritek coded, and the Fuji's are the least favorable of the bunch with the FUJIFILM coding or prodisc~ :) this is all in the 8x rated speed discs, 16x rated discs are a different story, but the same order basically holds true~ good luck

SONY brand -R 8x DVD's made anywhere I find are excellent. So if they say TAIWAN and they're SONY? get em. Never had a single coaster and I have over 800 Sony -R 8X blank DVD's currently made in both TAIWAN and JAPAN. There is no difference.:P

dabig25- Hey Buddy

The first thing we learn about rules is that there are always exceptions to them ! Case in point DVD media made in taiwan is generally considered Bad or low quality media in comaprison let's say to ther JAPANESE Made DVD media ! But Verbatim Media isa made in Taiwan and is of excellent quality ! Ritek in it's various disguises = Maxell 's - OFFICEDEPOT media ect !also Taiwan made & although it may not be up there with verbatim & Taiyo Yuden quality wise it's good media ! IT's not so much about the location as it is about quality control - Like why is it Verbatim media is so good and yet CMC Media is so CRAPPY !! and yet both are made in taiwan ? Quality Control or lack there of is your answer. The main reason people buy the Japanese dvd MEDIA is that they tend to have both excellent quality & quality control! Taiyo Yuedens & Maxell/hitachi and whatever brand name that is intelligent enough to use Taiyo Yuden to make their media for them are good bets media wise! The upshot is although we would all like to standardize on Taiyo yuden media when we can there is still some other media out there that can be our fall back stock - given a choice media wise thought I would go as follows - Taiyo Yuden 1st choice - verbatim 2cnd choice - maxell /riteks /maxell japan made = 3rd choice . Pretty much like Doc Ty 's list ! Hey he's been there & done that so he's gotta know something right ! anyhow just wanted to give you something to think about Hope it's helpful Ciao!

just remember that you can't really go wrong with the MADE IN JAPAN stuff! I only buy Taiyo Yuden..... I have enough stock on my desk so I will never run out of them! LOL No need to buy anything else! why bother with the others when you can have the best! I buy them at 200 a shot... I don't think I'll run out anytime soon!

As well explained by BIGTOXY69 most verbatim DVD5 media is made in taiwan and imho every bit as good as taiyo yuden. If you have a choice of buying sony mij media or verbatim mit media at half the price I would buy the verb's everytime. I personally prefer verbatim mit (mcc003) over any media made.

@81chris.....Since you live in Toronto, why don't you give Blankmedia.ca a try. I ordered two types of Taiyo Yudens (under $21.00 CDN for 50) to test on a Monday morning and they arrived by Canada Post truck before 9:00 A.M. Friday morning. That's very good service for here on the East coast. Will be ordering more DVD's and CD-R's soon. Checked out the Fuji MIJ's at Radio Shack / Circuit City that code out as Ty's, but when you add up buying by 5's and 10's in packs, you're WAAAAAY ahead going to Blankmedia. No affiliation at all....just a satisfied Ty guy....!

you will not find the MCC coding physically on the wrapper/spindle, that code is a MID coding, to be found once you get the media HOME and put it into your dvd burner drive and use a program like dvd identifier, dvdinfopro to give you that information~ :)

It's impossible to tell who actually makes a certain brand of media. There's a little thing I do when maxell/fuji/and sony go on sale. Look the outer shrink wrappers over carefully. Look for Made in Japan on those spindles and case packs of those 3 brand names. Lots of tys in the japanese fuji and sony, and hitachi in the japanese maxells. Their taiwanese counterparts aren't too bad for maxell and sony, but beware of the taiwanese dash fuji media.

Verbatim will usually say made in taiwan, and the dl verbs say made in singapore. Majority is good stuff unless you get into some cmags. As long as you have MCC,you are pretty much ok.Not CMC!

The chance of getting verbatims made by cmc mag now is pretty slim. The only verbatims floating around rescently made by cmc mag were the pearl whites and those are now being made by ritek. You should be safe with any verbatim's excluding the pearl whites.

olamite- yes that sounds good and I am pretty sure that the 25 pack spindle in those 75 sony's are the MIt's & the 50ct. spindle is Mij why they did it like that who knows ? But if your not completely hung up on the sony's I think sams had the 8x verbatims 100ct. spindle for $29.99 or so worth a thought ! Ciao!

Staple's expensive? Maybe on the last few weeks for HP and Memosux cmags.

Bestbuy and Office Depot have the sony on sale. Lots of tys in the +8x speed/some in the dash 8x speed/and reports coming through for Ty-G03 in their japanese spindles of dash 16x.

I believe they are all 50 pks for $15.

Office Max has verbatim 16x. Some $15 for a 50 pk. It's a great week for stocking up on media.
