hey....... what might've happened, and this is a long shot...
But maybe theres a wifi network around you, and he connected to network update, started updating... and A) the battery died during update, or B) he panicked and shut it off while updating.
I downgraded my first psp and have been playing with a 1.52>2.0>1.5 for a while now, nothing wrong, never a glitch or a blip (that i didnt cause)
This is all I could think of, sorry I couldnt help any further.

I might have an idea... Well there are some eboots that can brick your psp and people are really mean out there and put them into homebrew apps too. So he might of bricked the psp thinking it was a game. I have bricked a few psps doing this... ;_;

Well all you need to say to Sony is that you were updating to 2.60 and the AC cable got pulled out and bam bricked and unless they have some way to telling what you were doing when it bricked what can they do apart from asking you for money to fix it and they'll look at it like that's one 1.50 out the way.
aye aye man

they dont sue just for the reason it would cost them loads to take everyone with homebrew to court lol.
yeah they can tell if its been downgraded sadly,it leaves traces behind when u downgrade.
the other thing is they wont offer to fix it for a fee because you broke there rule, plue there $ony so theyd rather u spent loadsa money to buy a new one
your best bet is to take it bak to where you got it and say it broke during an upgrade sony wud know ur lying but a shop wouldnt know.

How did you know they do that? just curious
Maybe it was the downgrade because I don't think the white psp ever came with fw 1.5. It was released not too long after 2.0 came out. And the Sony rep told me that PSP's should only be updated through the PSP's original region. i. e. Japanese psp only with Japanese fw update. No co-mingling region updates. BUT I'm not 100% sure if the downgrade had to do with anything..

Probably the only suggestion I could give you right now is to call Sony, I mean it wasn't really his fault.
Steps to bricking a PSP:
1. Get a brick
2. Hit the psp with it untill it won't run any longer
Congratulations, your psp is now bricked.

How about the Famous PSP Exchange Trick, just buy a psp from the store and replace the new one with the broken one...if something goes wrong you could:
1) do a stand up and run out guns balzing out of the store( btw may attract more attention than required...
Warning: May be Rugby Tackled by Big Angry Security Guards)
2)say u brougth the wrong one and run out(possibly screaming)
3)send a good looking girl, tell her to work her charms and try getting it swapped
4)send a adorable cousin, when they refuse tell it to cry/start a tantrum...

Im glad that the "psp exchange trick" is famous.
and i stand up for it, im one of the first people to do it. and im (not saying much) the first person to say this.
#7- blow up the building and salvage what ever you can for psp plus whatever else you see that is an electronic. after doing that get most of the electronics and sell them on ebay.
