i just got a 50 pack of Verbatim from supermediastore.com
since i hear everyone say on here that its so good -- i figure i try it out - i been using mostly Ritek Ridata and works great 99% of the time
i used a Verbatim and it worked fine - burned good and no errors etc.
then i ran it to check the disk quality with cd/dvd speed and it ended with a 93 - which isnt bad - it had low colors on the graph but a higher jitter than the Ritek i also use - the Ritek had more color on the graph and lower jitter with a end result of 96 for the disk quality
so how is the Verbatim better ? is it worth to buy it - it costs more and quality comes out less - can someone explain that to me ?
the quality when i play it is just the same as the Ritek - so i dont see any difference -
the only difference i see is when i run it to check the disk quality with cd/dvd speed - then i see the end result
Verbatim = disk quality 93
Ritek = disk quality 96
they are both DVD+R -- 8X -- on a nec2500 with upgraded firmware for the booksetting -- both to dvd-rom
why is verbatim talked about so much about being the best -
a friend had a batch and it didnt work for him and then a different batch worked ok - so its a hit and miss i guess --
as for Ritek - it been pretty much equal all the time --
any ideas why either is better or worse then eachother

Verbatim uses advanced AZO and will last longer then Ritek. Do a search in these forums. There are people that have to re-backup entire collections of Ritek DVD's because of dye rot. While this may be isolated, the fact is Verbatim has a much better track record.
You can purchase CMC Mag, which many believe (including myself) to be the worst media available. Right after you burn it the score will be 95 or so. In 6-12 months the discs will score 0.
The senior members here know what they are talking about when it comes to quality media. Quality is not measured just at the time of burn, but for the life of the disc.
I love those verbatim +8x MCC-003 media. They are getting very hard to find.

With these verbatims,they do scan better with a faster burn speed at 8x. Those +16x verbs scan way better when burned at 12x compared to 4x on my benq 1640.
With the quality of media produced by verbatim and taiyo yuden,some of these quality drives perform better with the faster burn. I use to go with burn at 4x speed,but after seeing my scans,I go 8x on all my Ritek-r03/MCC-003/MCC-004/Maxell-002-00/and my favorite=Yuden000-T02.I can no longer burn at 2.4x because of too many crc errors on these backups.Still viewable in stand alone players,just I can't re-rip them.
That's another good quality test you can try. Throw one of those verb backups into your drive and re-rip it back to the hard drive.Too many of those little errors,or in the wrong spot,and you'll get a crc error. If you successfully back it to your harddrive,then you'll be ok. You just gotta get through without that crc error popping up.
If you are burning those backups at 2.4x and 4x,definitely speed them up and scan them. I also booktype all my backups. Very sweet compatabililty!

I totally agree ... I burn the 16x at 16x and the 8x at 8x with my BenQ DW1640 and NEVER get quality scores less than 98 ...
I like the 16x better for my BenQ, but my set top recorder likes the 8x and 4x much better

yes i agree what counts is the long term quality of the disc -
i have re ripped many of my older burns i did with a mixture of disks when i fist started and learing -- most worked fine and i re ripped to hard drive - there were a few -- i used at very beginning - optodisk and prodisc -- a few other brands - which i now know are cheaper - i have re ripped those also with very little problems - anyway - i am sure they are good discs - i usually burn at the fastest i can which is 8x - sometimes i use 6x - i though by burning slower it would be better for the quality as i read on here also - i never burned anything lower than 4x - thats with a 4x disc - but i only use 8x now and been for a long time since they came out - well i hope its not true that the riteks are no good over the long run because i have alot of movies on those discs !!!
so which are the best discs for now and the long run for storage wise
they all state that they last over 100 years - hahaa - i dont think that long - but i figure they should outlast me :)
