Hello all,

I bought some verbatim 16x certified dvd-r, and my drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108. The drive is supposed to be able to burn dvd-r and dvd+r at 16x. The software I tried to burn with was Nero (v 6.6.0.8) and when it came to burning the data compliation, the only available option was 4x, even after determining the maximum write speed. I'm still not really sure what firmware is, I think its sort of like um, the bios but for a device? Like a basic piece of hardwired software? Anyway the firmware version of my Pioneer writer is 1.10.

I am aware that often you cannot burn at the speed that the media claims is possible, but I thought with the better quality medias such as verbatim it was possible, or at least possible to get to 8x? What, if anything, can I do to get that write speed up?

Is it safe/advisable to burn at 16x anyway?

Also I want to get some double layer media to back up data. What products are advisable? I heard somewhere that you can get 18gb on some discs? Is this true or is the maximum 9gb? If there are existing threads in regard to the info I seek on double layer media please direct me there if appropriate.

Thank you very much for reading and all help much appreciated.

One thing is for sure, if you burn at the maximum rate you will be able to produce more coasters, faster. Check to see if an updated firmware is available.

Most serious burners of DVD media recommend 4X, usually, and generally no more than 1/2 of the listed maximum burn rating.

I'll just post some more info on the disc incase it helps.

I bought them in a 25pk cake box.
The code on the disc is ZD4076-DVR-J47C1. This appears on the innermost part of the reflective purple surface, just before the clear center.

The codes on the innermost part of clear plastic, right next to the hole are different on each disc.

The packaging states "earlier drives may require firmware upgrade" and "made in India".

Thanks.

Your f/w is way outdated. The current is 1.20 http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1898 Your vs of Nero is also outdated. Latest vs for nero6 is 6.6.1.4

Firmware is what tells your drive how to recognize and burn new media as it becomes available. I'm fairly sure the f/w update will solve your problem. Personally I don't recommend burning any media faster than 8x.

Thanks for the reply.

I have just read here however, that 16x disks have a higher rating, less errors when burned at 16x, and 8's when burned at 8? At least according to some peoples experience. So is it the firmware that is not letting me burn at 16x?

you need the firmware in order to handle the new media..
8x burn on that should be fine, but do also one at 4x.. then scan them both. see what works for YOU.

Do as you wish. I just recommended what works best for most. Burn high quality 8x media (verbatim, taiyo yuden, maxell mij) at 8x. All other 8x media at 4x and burn 16x media no faster than 12x, 8x preferably.
