I'm a newbie, using DVD shrink... I have a laptop with only one drive, a dvd-+ burner. I backed up my movie, saved it to my hard drive, opened NERO to back it up and I'm not sure why, but it won't let me hit "burn" button on Nero. Does DVD shrink and Nero only work if there are two seperate drives. Could someone lead me in the right direction, please. Thanks in advance.

i have neverf actually used Nero so maybe someone with experiance in that department can help you with specifics but i am possitive you dont need two drives.

if you use dvd shirnk to make an image you can use DVD Decrypter to burn the image to dvd-r

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shr...

both freeware, AD doesnt destribute decrypter anymore so if you dont already have it you'll have to search the web

Which version of Nero are you using? Most will autoburn w/ Nero - just make sure you have that enabled. In Shrink go to edit>preferences>file i/o tab - check enable burning w/ Nero. Then when you click backup it should default to this option - your drive should be selected under 'select backup target'.
When shrink's done it's part it will eject the disc and ask for a blank to be inserted - so yes you can use 1 drive.
Shrink is pretty cpu intensive - if using on a lappy I would also have it on a cooling pad and not multi tasking.

You can get all the free proggy's that aren't readily available here:

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

I backup movies on my laptop all the time, no problem having only one drive...I use Nero and DVD Shrink.

Here is a guide for burning with Nero:

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/burn%20with%20nero.pdf

When using DVD Shrink and burning with Nero, make sure that you have the "enable burning with Nero" option checked in DVD Shrink's preferences...and when backing up select your DVD Drive as your target and Nero will automatically burn the files DVD Shrink created for you.

Normally, you don't need to double task when working with that combo, unless you're running the latest buggy update. (6.6.1.4)
If you are, i would advise you to download the previous version (6.6.0.18).
Shrink automatically opens Nero up and auto-burns.

That isn't normal, unless your drive is a CD burner but 'only' DVD reader... Could you tell us the model of your burner?

Sounds like you are taking a longer route of backing up your dvds.

Binkie is right on the money. You gotta tick the box for enable burn with Nero. It's usually ticked as default, but double check it.

Then when you click backup, this screen will pop up:

Look at the red arrow. Your DVD-RW drive should be listed there.Just to the right of your model #-click on the right tab to view all your options. You want a checkmark beside Burn with Nero. That'll do your autoburning after the encoding. Just below that you'll have Create ISO Image and Create DVD files. You don't want either of those.Yours may be set to one of them right now.

Then after checking the other backup options, click ok and it'll stay that way.

2 separate drives make it easier to backup dvds. Use one for the reading to hard drive, and the other set as autoburn with Nero.It also saves the wear and tear of your best burner. With autoburning with DVD Shrink and Nero,no waiting around for a disc to spit out and insert blank. Just load both dvds in,double check backup options, and click ok and that's all she wrote. You can even set it to auto shutdown in case you run a backup and have to leave.

Thanks for all of everyone's help. We've double checked and made sure that the Shrink has the Nero setting to automatically open it after backing it up. Once it backs up, it says "your DVD Shrink has successfully backed up your dvd" and it's in the C drive in a folder. It doesn't open automatically and ask for a blank disk.
The model number for the dvd burner is: Dell 8Xcddvd burner double layer... we couldn't find the exact numbers.

I was trying to download Nero 7, to see if that would help. I can make a copy of a dvd that's already been burnt, but I can't start with DVD Shrink and back it up using Nero. One of my friends brought a dvd over that she had backed up and i was able to make another back up copy, but I can't originate it.

Hope this makes sense, sorry if I rambled on.
Anymore suggestions?

Look at the pic saugmon posted - what options does Shrink give you under the 'select backup target'. Is your drive listed? Does it say anything next to it like 'to enable burning install nero'?
Which version of Nero are you using?

Ok, under the "select backup target" it only gives Hard Drive Folder, and ISO Image File.

I'm not sure what Nero Startsmart I'm using, I couldn't find the model number, my neighbor downloaded her disk onto my computer that she got from her external Sony dvd burner. Should i try to uninstall it and download Nero 7 ?

No, you don't need to have 2 drives in order to backup. You can just have it transcode/compress and save it to your hard drive first and once it's done, you can burn with Nero, DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.

I just have basic Nero oem 6.0.0.21b. You need Nero burning rom to do the autoburning. I tried using Nero express 6.3.?.?on my cousin's pc and had no option to auto Burn with Nero. After downloading the burning rom part of the oem disc,DVD Shrink then showed the option to burn with Nero.

Dell uses many different brands of burners. When you get that backup target listing your writer,it'll tell you the exact model# or a generic # like IDE-8x-DVD-RW or something like that. You can also go through device manager/cd-dvd drives/double click that drive and click properties. It'll tell you model# and firmware version.

Here's how mine are listed:

Burn with nero

If you want to autoburn w/ shrink & Nero then uninstall the Nero installed and reinstall Nero 7 - if doing that - while your at Nero's website download the clean tool for which version you have -run it then install the new version. It sounds like what saugmon said you don't have the burning rom peice.
Dvd decrypter will also autoburn w/ Nero - you just need to have it installed and select 'iso image file and burn w/ dvd decrypter' under select back up target. You can find it here:

Dual drive or single drive, That backup target setting is the same either way for the auto-burning with DVD Shrink. You can also autoburn with DVD Decrypter or CopyToDVD.

Single drive, you'll have to wait till the encoding is done and the DVD-RW drive spits out the original. It'll wait until you insert a blank and then starts the burning process.

Dual drives,You just have to set the drive you rip the original-using dvd shrink/insert blank in DVD-RW drive/re-author-or entire disc/click backup-double check all those settings and click ok. It'll analyze-if quality enhancements are used/encode to harddrive/burn/and spit out your backup copy! Set it,and forget it!
