Actually we have never had a problem with too much information. It is usually a problem with not enough!
46% is pretty bad. Below the compression number you will see the audio and subpicture selections. Just uncheck what you don't need. That screenshot is from Fantastic 4 and I only kept one audio stream and got rid of everything else.
With a really low number it's a good idea to use Shrink's quality enhancements but we need to figure out why your rip is so slow before you slow it down even more with those.

46% compression on my backups-major shrinkage. That's pretty close to harry potter and lord of the rings for main movie only:
Athlon 3300+/1gb pc3200/and max smoothness= 2 hr backup time
Athlon 3000+/512 mbs pc2700/max smoothness= 2.5 hrs
P3-celeron 598 mhz/256mbs rimm/max smoothness= 12-16 hrs
That's some major compression and I have to use max smooth on them.I'd shorten up the time a little by unticking the AEC enhancements,but I'd see the square blockiness in the background. 10-15% compression, i may use max sharpness or none at all.Unticking AEC enhancements with that 598 mhz pc,and I'd cut my backup time down to a couple hours,depending on how much compression.That lower spec pc's backup time is really magnefied by the increased compression.
No compression backup:
Athlon 3300+ at 8x speed= 18-25 mins
Athlon 3000+= 20-25 mins
Celeron 598 mhz- 30-45 mins.
For a DVD-5 to DVD-5 copy: Use DVD Decrypter is mode ISO read and write. On any of my 3 pcs,it only takes about 5 mins to rip to hard drive and 15 mins to burn at 4x. The processor speed makes very little difference for that program,but does with DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink max's out your processor. Try shutting down background programs to free up resources.

OK, The first thing I noticed was your amount of RAM. It looks like you have 255MB, probably as two 128 MB chips. See if you can upgrade that to 512MB or more. I had a similar computer and adding RAM made big improvements in my rip times.
You're doing all your DVD ripping through a USB connection which does not help. You can replace the CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM for $20.00-$40.00 and get another jump in performance. Burners are also limited in speed compared to a DVD-ROM so it's best to use the burner just for burning.

Burning with the external connection should be fine. Keep the burn speed down to 4X and it shouldn't be a problem.
At some point you will be limited by your 2 GB processor but you should still get big performance gains with more RAM and an internal DVD-ROM.

ok, thanks for the help. lately i've just been burning the dvds i want to back up overnight so that it doesn't tie up my computer during the day, and since i'm usually sleeping i don't notice how long it's taking. so for now, i'll probably just stick with the 2.5 hour process.

@betty: Try and change it to "DMA if Available", and see if the option stays. If not, it could be an option in the BIOS that is keeping the channel in PIO mode.
@ the others: To truly increase DVD Shrink's processing speed, dual core CPUs. Even a $300 investment in an X2 3800+ will cut the time in half. 512mb ram should be the minimum to run Windows, having less requires your pagefile to be used extensively, adding tons of processing time. Go for the memory upgrades at least, most nowadays are really inexpensive for some high quality sticks.

If you don't know how or the make of the BIOS, download CPU-Z. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Click on the motherboard tab and post the BIOS information.

You should also run the Nero InfoTool. The reason I'd like you to do that is so I can see how your drives are configured. Many Dells come from the factory with the jumpers on the optical drives set to Cable Select. This may be part of the problem.
The standard configuration for pretty much every other computer on the planet is to set the jumpers to Master and Slave. The jumper on the drive installed at the end of the IDE buss is set to Master, the jumper of the drive connected to the middle of the IDE cable is set to Slave.
At some point you should also see if your IDE cables are 40 pin, 80 pin or a "Y" cable. The Y cable is sometimes used on PCs that use cable select. The correct set up would be to use 80 pin cables with a master/slave setup.
Once you figure out if your system is set up with Master/Slave or Cable Select you could try this registry tweak to reset the error count. Windows will revert to PIO mode if a certain number of transfer errors occur.
(Be very careful here.
You should backup your registry before proceeding.)

Run REGEDIT.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances.
You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.
Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, you've made it! (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA)

Also, as was suggested by dolphin2 check your bios. Dell only sets up for what comes in the computer, if you add something you need to check and make sure that it is enabled in the bios. My Dell only came with a CD burner, when I yanked this out and put in my other drives I had to go to the bios and make sure they were running right. My Dell CD burner was also set to PIO mode and I had to change it. Just use the F2 key on startup and make sure all is right.

Thats good timely info on the situation you had with your Dell! I bought my bro a new Pioneer 110 for his 8400 Dimension and I have not yet been able to get it to work. I'll have him try "turning it on" in the bios.
I don't know why this is the case with Dells.
On my PC, I just put the thing in and boot up. I get a "New hardware found!" message and the drive works right away. I have never had to open the bios.

YES ! YES! YES ! How amazing ! You guys have did what tech support at Dell ( Award Winning ...what a joke ) and Benq couldn't do !~
When I purchased my new Dell I got a plain jane version with the only upgrade being 1 gig of ram . I wanted to install my own dvd burner brand new from Benq DW1655 16X lightscribe and I also wanted to add my own second hard drive 200 gig from my old machine .
Plug and Play right ? how hard could that be ? Dam Dells !Yes everything worked ...but not right !~ I went into the Bios and *enabled* my second hard drive which wasn't listed and this fixed the problem !~
New burning specs :

It was taking me over 1.5 hrs before sometimes 2 hrs !~
I was encoding a movie before I went to bed at night and just letting it run !~

Glad it worked out for you, I agree on the Tech support for Dell it is non-existent. I have called and called only get the Bombay techie and if you ask a question not in the manual they cry. In fact they sent me a file to put my drives in PIO mode, now why would I want to do that. Good luck and very happy burning to you :)

If U R still using DVD Decrypter, maybe you should switch to DVDFab DECRYPTER.
It is the successor of the former one.
I also reccomend burning at 4x, because you will achieve success.
If you R in a hurry I suggest you to slow down.
Most of the elders in these forums advise the same...cut down your burning speed.
Use DVDFab with DVD Shrink and you will succeed.
