If I were a betting person, which I am then I would take bets that its the CRAP memorex media that is causing your problem.

Memorex has a bad reputation with fellow AD members, its made by CMC Mag and is very inconsistent in its performance. Change to a good quality disc such as Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony (made in japan)

The Sony +R made in Japan is Taiyo Yuden. Amazing as it may seem, some of the better Verbatim made in Japan is also Taiyo Yuden; though Mitsubishi makes some of it as well. Taiyo Yuden gets around doesn't it? Plus, Taiyo Yuden can be purchased under the Taiyo Yuden brand name. Did I mention I got some Fuji 8X +R that was Taiyo Yuden. ;) The Taiwan +R Sony is top grade. At least the folks at DigitalFAQ agree with me on that one. ;) It wouldn't hurt to follow gwendolin's advice and try a different media. It would only be a waste if you decided not to use recordable media in the future.

By the way, use the freeware DVD Identifier and let us know who manufactured your Memorex. Most of it has been the questionable CMC.

If you continue to have problems after using quality media, we're still here to help. It would be strange though if it isn't media related because your recording failed to play on different standalone equipment. You could try playing the disc on another standalone player known to support the -R, just to be on the safe side. Any family members or friends have a player you can try it on?

Guess you're new enough that you don't understand. Some media causes problems with drives as far as compatibility. It doesn't depend on price. CMC makes much of Memorex's media. It's a known problem. That's why I asked you to download the little freeware app DVD Identifier so you could tell us the manufacturer of the media. The brand is not always the manufacturer. In fact, Memorex doesn't manufacture any of its own media. If you're having problems with one disc from a spindle, or even certain brand, it could be all of them. You could even be having firmware problems with your burner. Burning DVDs is more difficult than just burning a CD. Speaking of firmware, is it up to date? You mentioned the CloneDVD2 as the transcoder, are you using AnyDVD along with it?

@p82, To reinforce what I have said and brobear has supported me in saying it could be media related (memorex) heres a little light reading about Memorex and CMC Mag manufactured media.
I hope at the end of your perusal of this thread you may change your mind, and reconsider this statement.
the dvds was not by any means cheap ones

We are here only to advise, the decision to accept our advice is yours, Cheers.

With CMC, it's a bet to get away from it in most cases where a person is experiencing problems. I didn't see where you answered even one of my questions.

We need some info to work with. But knowing you're probably using CMC, it may boil down to changing media anyway. The first question to answer is have you had any success with recording DVD backups to date or are you a brand new novice? What model burner are you using? What is the firmware version? What decryption software are you using? What manufacturer made the media?

The media problem of which these guys speak of is valid, although I would guess if you have done the burning process right your machines would at least recognize your disc's. I have many a movie that still works on crappy media. My guess is that somewhere in your process somehow the disc was not finalized or something else went wrong..

Start by checking what your burner is (if you need help finding out that ask) Then post what exactly you are doing step by step then some one who is familar with your programs can come in and point you in the right direction. So tell us what exactly you are doing ok?

If I were you I would try to use dvd shrink and dvd decrypter. Their are many guiddes to use these programs and once you got the settings right it is as simple as pushing a few problems. First the decrypter rips any encryption off the origanal disc and puts it on to your hard drive.

Then shrink picks it up and actually shrinks the movie so it will fit on a 4.7 GB disc Then you use decrypter again to write the movie whne shrunk to your blank disc. Both of these programs are free and available here.

Well, having to slow down the burn speed for "dodgy" media should tell you something. LOL I still suggest you check for firmware updates for your drive. I recently bought a new burner and needed to upgrade it out of the box. Then feel free not to follow any suggestions. After all, you did a successful backup. Now you may already know all there is. ;) However, you will have better results with a maintained burner using good quality media. You may not need a firmware update, but using Memorex, I can easily say you can do better with the media selection.
