Ok it's a older movie I am backing up called The four seasons. I run it though shink. It has finished analizing ,now I am looking at the left column and it says main movie 4,437 MB. So I'm thinking my target size is set at 4300 add a bit of sound and I won't have to compress this one very much and thats a good thing. So now I push the re-author button. Now I am reading the right column and it says main movie and under that title 1 - 7,287 MB .Wait a minute what happened to the 4,437 mb I saw before? I now drag over title 1 and push the compession button and turn off all the sound except for the AC3 2ch and I am looking at 63.2% This sucks . What's going on here ? I don't get this , and it's not the first time I have seen this happen either. The movie is only 1hour and 48 minutes long.
Can any one shead some light on this situation for me. I don't feel the movie is good enough to be spead over two disc , on the other hand I have a 50'' HD tv which really shows if the compression is too high. Thanks , Confussed.
Movie size was 7287 minus 4437 equals 39% compression( give or take) or 61%.
What you saw first was the whole movie compressed and Shrink allocated to Main Movie 4437. Go back to the left side under whole movie and on the right make the compression zero and see what the size of the DVD is.
If you want to try a beter program try DVD-Rebuilder ( free version). It is an encoding program and not a trancoding program like Shrink. It will just take alot longer to do a movie. DVD-RB also has a Pro version as it does alot more than the free version but you can not beat the free version price. Try it and it might suprise you w/ that big scene TV
Thanks very much Car.Mike for explaining that to me. It all makes sense now.
I was wondering when you said DVD-rebuilder takes alot longer just how much time are we speaking of. For example , the average movie takes me about 25 to 30 minutes. Also would I find my self having problems with decryiption using DVD rebuilder , that I don't presently have using DVDShrink?
And finally , is there a easy way to explain to me the difference between a encoding program and a trancoding program?
Thanks again.
using DVD-rebuilder can take up to several hours but the quality is great ,i dont have that much time though lol . you might try clonedvd 2 with anydvd ,very easy to use ,great quality and you can control the burn speed ,re-author etc.and the quality is MUCH better than dvd shrink ,theres a 21 day free trial also ,use this guide
Transcoding:
http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/transcoding.cfm Encoding:
http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/encode.cfm But what it all boils down to is transcoding programs like shrink, recode, clonedvd2, shrink down the file size by removing some stuff from the file, whereas Encoders like rebuilder remake the file and re-encode with CCE in the pro case.
If im wrong on this, someone will jump in and tell you, but that is the way i understand it to be. So transcoders are faster because they are removing some stuff, but dont have to rebuild the whole movie. Rebuilder is best for movies with high compression, at least that is what i use it for. Though if the movie is good enough, i just do a DL burn, and dont worry about compression.
