Why is it that when i do a speed test with nero, i get different results EVERY time. I even get different results scanning the same disc over and over.

The best score i have seen is a 50 on Quality Score. Even when i run an origonal (Pressed) DvD through the test, i get low scores. At first I thought it might be the burn speed i used to use (8x) so i dropped the speed down to 4x. Same results. Then i thought it was just the media, so i got me some Verbatim's, and it is the same exact thing.

Also, this is being done on a DvD rom, not a RW. My RW wont do the speed test for some reason. I have plans on upgrading to a BenQ RW drive in the near future, maybe that will solve my problems.

Any suggestions would help in the meantime.

Yeah ... the drive is just as important in determining your 'quality score' as the media itself ...

In my opinion, the Philips chipped BenQ drives (DW1620/1625/1640/1650/1655) are the best followed closely by the Plextor (PX712/716) ... all the rest just keep trying to compete

The results are based on errors the drive has seen and has had to correct. The errors could be due to transient debris, to the drive being bumped slightly while running, fluctuations in power, and so forth. That's why the scans will always vary a bit. The conditions during a read are seldom exactly the same.

Some drives will also vary over time. A drive can give very different results an hour, a day, a week, or a month later on the same disc. Check several different drives and select the one that gives the most consistent results with a medium over time as your "reference" drive to check other media. Nero is somewhat erratic in its results because it is so dependent on drives. K-Probe is more consistent, but it is relegated to Lite-On and Lite-On based drives. Plextools is the most dependable consumer utility in my testing; but it, too, is restricted to one set of drives.

The burner i am currently using is an NEC 2100, but has been "upgraded" to the 2510 with firmware.

I got this drive "used". It was a friends, and he wanted to upgrade to a 16x so he gave me this one, about 9 months ago. He does about 100 time more burning than i do, so needless to say, this drive has a few hours put on it, lol.

When i day different results, i mean that i do a test, right when it finishes, i do another test, and the results are drastically different.

The drive that is doing the test is not the burner, but the reader, as the burner wont do the test :(
