PS2 version: SCPH-70002 (satin silver)

The DVD-R backups I burned work 100%. (Boot quickly, PS2 doesn't make strange noise, no glitches)

None of the CD-R backups worked.

I use the SmapMagic CD version to boot the PS2, then swap with the CD-R backup. The screen goes black, and the laser moves back and forth with elastic movement. The game doesn't load.

I have tried special boot option. (square instead of cross)

I'm using Alcohol 120% to burn the CD-R disks. (cue + bin format) I choose Datatype "Playstation 2" whenever possible (the Datatype option is not avaible for .iso).

Is it possible the SM3.6+ Boot CD is a dud? It looks normal, many grooves, and boots normally also.

I'm using Strathfield generic CD-R (52x, 700 MB). I have been using them with PSone for years without problem, and they don't rot, unlike TDK media. Can you recommend a better brand?

I don't have any CD format originals, they all say 'DVD-ROM' on the back. (Even State of Emergency, which looks so basic I wonder why they didn't fit it on a CD) This means DVD -> CD scan TOC trick is not avaible. Not that swapping twice would be a satisfactory solution, but the backups I'm trying to run are unavaible in this country.

After booting with SM3.6+ boot DVD, how do I scan the TOC of a PS2 CD?

Is there a memory card / USB memory stick - exploit avaible in conjunction with SM3.6+? It said on the box it could launch from those devices, is there anything interesting/useful I can do with that feature?

Sorry about the long post, but I wanted to include as much information as possible.

Thanks for reading.

The disks I tried to burn:

1. Rez is much smaller than the maximum PS2 CD size, more like 200 MB.

2. Ico is close to capacity, the bin file is 638,640,912 bytes. Alcohol 120% refuses to burn it to DVD-R, probably because the .cue file defines the media type.

If media's not the problem try the multigame tutorial so you can put a few cd games onto one dvd so it boots to a menu. Have a look for it on google.

I have tried burning a Verbatim Datalife+ (blue dye) CD-R at the slowest speed avaible (8x) and it behaves exactly the same... that gives 3 possibilities:

A) Swapmagic 3.6+ CD is faulty

B) Image is faulty

C) Laser has to be aligned to read CD-R's, even good quality ones

Has anyone else here used SM3.6+ CD successfully?

As for multiple CDs on one DVD, I did a search in Google, but didn't turn up anything. You got a link?

I burned Rez and Ico at 1x using FireBurner, on a different PC.

Rez works now, it takes a long time to load though.

Ico has lots of problems, not only does it take a long time to load, every cutscene the laser is very noisy, making an irritating high-pitched squeal. Also, by the third cutscene the sound skips while the video continues. All in all, no joy.

I feel somewhat frustrated by all this, and wonder what I could do to make my PStwo play back CD-R backups more reliably.

That multi-CD-to-DVD compiler sounds pretty good right now. I don't think the CD laser is misaligned... though it's hard to be sure until I get a CD original.

K i might have just found it, on this thread http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/238402 it has a link to http://www.geocities.com/perfect_cellz/multidisk.zip that might be the tutorial. I havent checked yet but it probably is.

EDIT: turns out thats a different one and doesnt have any of the files needed. I will upload mine somewhere then post the link.

@Marco: I actually have a similar problem - I have had sucess in burning 2 CD games, Contra: Shattered Soldier, and Sega Tennis without any problems whatsoever. Swap Magic picked them up perfectly, although these were downloads. I tried backing up my original Ico, and I ran into the same problem you had - I got "Invalid PS2 Disc" when attempting to boot from Swap Magic. I ripped the .iso with DVD Decrypter, which is what I always use (never had problems before), then burned it at x24 (again, same as always). Just curious as to anyone's input on this issue, since it's got me a little puzzled. BTW i use Memorex CD-R's, but HAVE NOT had a problem with them for the other games, and burned them at x24 as well.... ??
