I have DSL which i connect to through a router. My computer all of a sudden started to stop connecting to the internet. My computer wasn't recieving an ip address from the router. i am running windows xp. when i use the repair function for the internet connection it fails. when i use ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew i get an error "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHPC server. Request has timed out." i have use the winsockxpfix and no success. i have deleted the winsock and winsock2 registerys and then reinstalled the tcp/ip protocols. I have even gone as far as to reinstall windows xp. i know the cables are good and i tried a brand new network card. i have been searching the internet for about a week now with no help and know i am clueless. please help!

The first thing I try when having a DHCP problem is hard coding the address instead of using DHCP. You would need to know your router's IP address. For example, Linksys is usually 192.168.1.1 Make your IP address on your computer 192.168.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of the router address, 192.168.1.1 Once you have that set, try to ping 4.2.2.2. That's a pingable internet address. You still won't have DNS at this point so you can't go to www.afterdawn.com or anything that needs translated from a name to an IP. You should also be able to get to your router by putting it's address in a browser, http://192.168.1.1 and check the config on it. Check the DHCP settings on it to see if there is a problem. If there is fix it and reset your TCPIP settings to DHCP and try again.
