I just got DVDInfoPro and am running the quality test on some of my burned media, I am getting a pretty consistent 96% quality rating with the ones I have tested so far. Is that good or am I doing something wrong for it to not be higher? FYI I am using Verbatim 16x DVD-R's burned at 4x. Also, I had a two discs that were more like 93% but I do recall using my computer to do other things while those discs were burning..apparently I shouldn't do that, is that correct? Is it smart to leave the computer alone while burning? Sorry for the newbie questions I am just trying to get this all figuerd out before I burn tons of discs and find out I am not doing something right! Thanks!
Update: I just got done testing one and it finished at 98.55%, wonder what I did different when burning that one? It is a copy of a copy..weird. I just scanned the first copy and it is only around 93% but the one that I copied from that one was 98.55%, whay would that be? Is it because I am using my compute during some burnings that there is so much variation or is that normal?

First of all LEAVE YOUR COMPUTER ALONE WHEN YOU BURN DISCS ... NO MULTI-TASKING ... make sure that your firmware is up to date .. this is especially important when you use 16x discs .. I've had the best scans when I burn the 16x discs at max speed .. I recommend trying 4x, 8x 12x and max and comparing the results

I don't recommend burning at MAX speed. It might save time but certain players might not read your disc! I always play it save now and burn at 4x! I used to burn at 8x but then I had some reading issues on some of my discs with my player. So I used what is good for me and my player---- slowing the speed down works fine!

I am curious, Catfreak...have you played your discs on other players? Some discs might not work properly. Something to consider when burning discs fast saves time but if it causes issues with players does the time saved matters???

SLOW BURNING causes issues !!!
up to now i burned about 20x25 of the 16x verbatim
the best resaults came with 8x burn speed on both formats
with updated BENQ-DW1640 and NEC-3550&3540

best of luck

 ... IHoe, I burn thousands of discs (of the cats I breed, in action along with petigrees) and distribute them along with my business cards at cat shows all over the midwest. When I have any compatibility problems (almost never) I definately hear about it. I ALWAYS booktype and burn at maximum speed and, after being played in literally thousands of players, have approximately a 99.3% (my last calculation) success rate. Not too bad .. In my business, returns cost sales, good will and reputation!

what about your backups on DVD movies? Since I joined AfterDawn I have heard and been drummed in that burning at half the value of the disc rated (8x DVD+Rs burn at 4x) will give you better results! Unless I skipped something here about or things have changed I am not going into all the threads I read about speed and burning! I know that reputed members like BBMayo, ScubaPete, Mort81, Creaky and many many others have had discussions about burning speeds and from my observation told to slow the speed down so there wouldn't be any write errors, or read errors by the players! their famous saying is:just because a car has 140MPH writen on the speedometer doesn't mean you drive the car that fast! I was told and drummed into my head the most DVD dyes are made and rated to go the max but for video writing you should keep the speeds safe at half the rating of the disc! Data DVDs are different than video DVDs! to stop errors (reading or writing) burn at slower speeds! soooooo if it works for you .... fine. but I have burnt at higher speeds and came up with issues so it doesn't work for me!! And I think I have a prety good system (check signature). I'll think I'll start a thread on just this topic right now!

 we're talling DVDs here, not cars ... there's a legality issue with cars or else I'd be going 140+

As far as the burning speed being burned into your head by my good buddy Pete and others ... well that was before the advent of the newer media (16x was not around yet and 8x was in it's infancy) and the newer burners and firmware etc ... Certain burners like my BenQDW1640 love burning fast and the scans prove it. I'm not saying ALL burners will fly like the BenQ but certainly the top notch ones will ...

Your best bet is to burn the same movie with the same type disc on the same burner at as many different speeds as you can ... scan them and compare the results

Actually, I have seven drives in three computers ... the BenQ1640 is the best followed by a Plextor712 ... The only other decent one is a 'high mileage' 3500+ burn Litey

It's all in the chipset ... The BenQ is Philips and burns DVD+R with excellence while the Sanyo chipped Plextor does a better job with the CDs ... I scan every burn with a LiteOn1633 using KProbe so the scans are impartial ... so to speak ...

@catfreak

Noticed your tribute to "Lilly". Is it unusual for a cat to live to 17? Never had a cat and didn't know they lived this long. Sorry for your loss.
